CONCORD MONITOR Monday September 8 1997 C3 Capitols are champs Despite playing with a cast on his broken wrist Robbie McQueen pitched six innings and had the game winning hit in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Concord Capitols over the Merrimack Brewers 13 12 in the third and deciding game of the Over 30 League championship series McQueen had three hits in the game as did Mark Burdick and Grip Smith while John Butler (home run) Alan Orlosk (home run) Ken Craigue and Dale Emerson had two hits apiece Ronnie Dun lop who was the winning pitcher in Game 1 Saturday pitched to three batters and earned the victory in Game 3 as well Merrimack had won the opener 16 15 in 12 innings despite the efforts of Butler and Burdick who each had three hits and two home runs Craig Weyant Craigue Smith and Orlosk each had two hits in the opener The championship was dedicated to the late Carl Russell Youth soccer The Deerfield Dynamos 14 soccer team opened the fall season with a 4 2 loss to Rochester United Saturday Elspeth Benoit scored twice assisted by Sarah Godbois and Katie Laroche Jenn Bouchard Hannah Eaves and Vanessa Santana anchored the defense Megan Sperl and Erin Woods joined Benoit in leading the attack Keepers Woods and Sam Buffington combined for 18 saves ll girls Bow Grappone beat Timberlane 6 0 in its season opener behind the goals of Sara Ganley (four) Jessica points with 16 rebounds against a Newark frontcourt which averaged 6 feet Colby Sawyer results Tyler Blout scored from 22 yards out at 92:40 of sud den death overtime to lead the Colby Sawyer College Lori Nevers (140) Phantoms lose The Phantoms of New Hampshire soccer team lost in the conso lation game of the USISL national championship yesterday 1 0 to the San rancisco Seals Reinhard Geise scored the only goal at 10:51 beating Phantoms goalie Jeremy Bailey (four saves) Elie Monteiro and Jamie Williams a pair of New Hampshire Col lege alums were named to the all tournament team for the Phan toms UNH results The University of New Hampshire soccer team beat St College 2 1 to improve to 4 0 and claim the Smith Barney Classic championship yesterday in Burlington Vt Michael Keevan and Jeff Rothlein had the UNH goals to help keeper Ethan Holmes (eight saves) earn the victory Keevan who had three goals and two assists in two tournament games was named the offensive Most Valuable Player The UNH soccer team was dominated by Michigan yesterday 6 0 and saw its record fall to 1 1 Nicole Coupland of Lon donderry had the only two shots of the game Sophomore Kristin larrusso scored two goals to propel the UNH field hockey team to its first win of the season a 2 1 victory over Cai Berkeley in consolation game of the PhoenixUMass Invitational reshman keeper Amy Agulay made five second half saves to preserve the win KSC result Kevin Chevalier had a goal and two assists to lead the Keene State soccer team to a 3 0 victory over SUNY Brockport in the championship game of the Brockport Invitational Doug Ware of Gilford and Jared Bosse of Milford had the other Keene State goals in front of goalie Matt Andrulot (three saves) Keene State is now 2 0 PSC result Shawn Higgins scored early in the first half to break a scoreless tie and propel Plymouth State College past Babson 1 0 in the sea son opener for both teams yesterday PSC keeper Magnus Karsson made six saves to earn the shutout guys waiting for me are joked the Red Sox second baseman who hit his third homer of the year one of six Boston home runs in an 11 2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers body hit home runs Troy hit his first career grand slam John Valentin homered twice and rye Bill Haselman and Wilfredo Cordero also homered as the Red Sox tied a season high for homers and avoided elimination in the AL East for the previous best win total was 16 last season Chipper Jones hit a two run homer off Joey Hamilton (10 6) in the first inning Reds 6 Pirates 3 Dave Burba (8 10) retired the last 17 batters he faced setting up his third win over Pittsburgh this season and Jon Nunnally drove in three runs Burba allowed only two runs on four first inning hits and left the game after his right hand was grazed by a the Braves in the NL East race Indians 5 White Sox 2 Matt Williams extended his career high hitting streak to 23 games and Cleveland held Albert Belle hitless in his second home coming series as the Indians com pleted a three game sweep of Chicago Rookie Jaret Wright (6 3) allowed two runs and seven hits in 6'3 innings walking three and strik ing out two for the victory CART Title belongs to Zanardi race to Vasser Ganassi teammates share the spotlight The Associated Press MONTEREY Calif Team mates Alex Zanardi and Jimmy Vasser picked up all the spoils in Texaco Havoline 300K with Vasser winning the race and third place finish clinch ing the PPG CART World Series championship It was almost a reversal of last race when Zanardi won cap turing rookie of the year honors and Vasser wrapped up the title for the Target Chip Ganassi Racing team by finishing fourth Vasser was dominating yester day coming up with his first victory in 16 months dating to the US 500 in May of 1996 Zanardi who came into the race knowing he needed only to finish eighth or better to shut out runner up Gil de erran had some rough moments but was never below sixth and never fell behind de er ran who wound up fifth The aftermath of the 83 lap race on Laguna Seca 2238 mile nine turn road course was somewhat bizarre as the victorious teammates attempted to drive a victory lap side by side and wound up banging together with car spinning to a stop Zanardi continued around to the pit lane while Vasser got out of his car and hitched a ride back on the sidepod of Max race car When Vasser got to the pits he jumped into the celebra tion hugging Zanardi I have to give up the (PPG) Cup to Zanardi anybody this is the guy I want to give it Vasser said smiling at his Italian teammate planning to make the said Zanardi whose victory ritual earlier this season included doing doughnuts making circles on the track with his car were just going to drive around together going to go home happy added the 30 year old Zanardi who earned a $1 million championship bonus from series sponsor PPG De erran who clinched second place in the championship said: knew it was going to be a long shot (to catch Zanardi) We were counting on the unexpected and the unexpected Vasser who led the last 58 Japs beat Englishman Mark Blundell to the finish line by 0543 seconds about four car lengths Zanardi moved from fifth to third over the last five laps On Lap 79 Zanardi gained two spots when Scott Pruett and Andre Ribeiro banged slowing Ribeiro and sending Pruett into a sand trap He then moved up to third when Mauricio Gugelmin Blun teammate went off course and hit a tire barrier on the final lap The early part of the race saw the most action with pole winner Bryan Herta and Zanardi battling at the front
