Tuesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center Camden where he had been trans ferred Sunday from the South Jersey Hospital System Bridgeton Division Born in Philadelphia PA the son of the late Hiram and Grace Bates and the husband of Reah (Nee Pickering) Bates He was a graduate of Ocean City High School and Alfred Institute of Rochester NY He was an US Army Airforce veteran of WWII He was in the battle of the Rhineland and received the following decorations European African Middle Eastern Ribbon Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal He was employed with the US Postal Service and retired in 986 from Bridgeton Post office after 35 years of service Member of the Greenwich Baptist Church Mr and Mrs Bates celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary March 16 2000 His survivors include his wife five 1958 Mrs Bruton attended the Newcomb Hospital School of Nursing and then completed her schooling at the Atlantic City Hospital School of Nursing She worked as School Nurse for the Buena Regional School District the Rangely School District in Colorado and later in Texas for the San Benito School District She had also been employed at the Newcomb Hospital and also performed private duty nursing
