Northwest Arkansas TIMES, Thursday, Of (nber 24,1974--7 Check Windshield Wipers During Rain As with so many other vital components on your car, your windshield wipers are most JiUely to fail just when you need them Ihc most -- (luring the next rainstorm. During the winter, windshield wipers have to fight freezing snow, ice, flush and road salt. In the summer, heat, smog, ami even your service station attendant's windshield washer spray work together to reduce the efficiency of your wiper system. It's no wonder after sitting quietly on your windshield deteriorating day-in and (lay-out that they often fail to do their job. The best time to check your windshield wiper system is during a rainstorm. Or you can check it the next time you go Mandatory Inspection Necessary "Mandatory" and "compulsory" are not (he most popidar words in the English language. Among car owners they a r c especially distasteful because the automobile is, in and of itself, an expression of the free spirit. Nevertheless, as our roads become more crowded and our society becomes more complex, . the need for stronger disciplines in the operation and maintenance of our cars increases. One area in which most states have been woefully lax is that of vehicle inspection. A truly effective maintenance inspection would involve more factors than safety. For this reason some legislators are now looking at motor vehicles from the standpoint of its environmental influence as well as safety. Air pollution and noise pollution are becoming matters of serious public concern. HIGHWAY ACT The Federal Government undertook to regulate the mechanical condition of the nation's cars with its Highway Safety Act. of 1DB6. At that time 20 slates and the Djstricl of Columbia had periodic motor vehicle inspection. Another 10 initiated programs before the 11)70 deadline required by Department of Transportation. One more had come in since then. Supposedly, the government would hold back a percentage of the state's federal highway Innds if no inspection program were developed by the 1970 deadline. This has not happened. TASK FORCE Motor and Equipment Manu- national organization representing manufacturers of automotive service p a r t s a n d equipment, has created a task force to help bring about some much n e e d e d broadening, strengthening and standarciiza- i lion of vehicle inspection nation, wide. Some progress has teen made. According to Wayne E. Happ, Chairman of the Task Force. '· '"the significant additions to '. vehicle inspection programs that will emerge during the ·· '70s, other than more thorough · and sophisticated testing tech- '·. nlques and standards, are the inclusion of exhaust emission cheeks and tests for noise level. ' : "Except in a few isolated j cases, these factors are at the ' ^discretion ol the ear owner. I This would be fine if people ; ;were more responsible. Human,. ; nature being what it is, we expect that nationwide legis- -' )ation will be the eventual through a car wash. You can also perform a good c h e c k while someone sprays your windshield with a garden hose. However you choose to check your 'wipers, you should check them on both the fast and slow speeds. TROUBLE SYMPTOMS If any trouble symptoms are present, you should replace as much of your wiper system as is necessary to eliminate t h e problem. In many cases, all that is needed is new squeegees (the rubber part that contacts the windshield). When you do replace all or part of your wiper blades, make sure you replace both sides at the same thine. If one wiper is shot, it's a good ''jet the other one is about to go, too. S a f e vision during hazardous road conditions is too important to risk for a few dollars. One final tip. If you are replacing your wiper blades, consider the new molded poly- carbonate blades. They perform more efficiently than the metal type and they cut down on glare and rattle as well. FIVE INDICATORS Here are five visible or audible Indicators that will signal need for attention to your windshield wipers. Clear driving vision is especially important during the bad weather season. Check for the following signs of malfunctioning: 1. Streaking -- arcs of im- wiped moisture wilh-in wiping area. 2. Hazing -- a thin, hard-to- see-through film covering most or all of the wiping area even after the blade has just wiped. 3; Chattering - "stuttering" motion of the blade accompanied by a "chattering" noise as the blade sweeps across the windshield, with some areas left unwiped. 4. Scalloping -- a ragged outer edge in the wiping pattern. 5. Rattling -- no visible signs of problems, but the wiper blade assembly sounds as if it is very loose. Predominantly occurs in all-metal construction blades.
