There's a reason for not rushing, as anyone who looks Son years ahead can see. The critics have been particularly harsh about the mass dcmonstra- lions t h a t followed the brief, "30- minute man" nominating speeches. They have labeled these riots on the f(oor as phony as a bolt with rubber oars since the delegates waiter! so calmly for the signal lo become hysteriral and some wore several candidates' buttons. Bin in 2,452 A.D. an antro- policist might feel this spectacle was an invaluable link between Ihe early American tribal dances incl the m a t i n g call of the alba- trnss. It's the economists and sociologists of that time who might run i n t o difficulty determining | the profise significance of the : buttons of two candidates on the lapel of one delegate. To the economist it would be prr-lty good proof t h a t Americans of today had a fervent faith in personal insurance while the sociologists might consider those twn buttons as evidence of the will to win. no matter who wins. TV Hu Problem The delegates who repeatedly interrupted the proceedings with . ibout how we'll look to ,.,,, de»cend«nt«. This doenn't me*n vigorous steps shouldn't be taken to provide more TV time for those delegates who ask for polling only because they like to be in foeu«. The broadcasting companies, which hardly ever seem to mention money in connection with TV | time, could help out in this problem at no expense to the delegates. If they set up private rooms with TV cameras, one for each ', delegate, each could be seen individually by the follts back home as often as he pleased. And it would be short-sighted indeed to tamper with the convention oratory which the critics so sourly regarded as bombast and contempt for the intelligence of the listening public. These orators wonderfully simplify problems which might otherwise hopelessly confuse a public puzzled to know j whom to niame and whom t o , praise for what happened in the j past four years. j They do this by dividing the I political world into saints and sin- ! ners. And if one orator sounds ex '' «ctly like all the others it's probably only because he wishes to bring those people up to date who tuned in late, and not because he couldn't think of anything better.
