14 Northwest Arkaniat TIMES, Monday, Oct. 14, 1974 Tonight Before NFL Game ABC Examines Problems Of Schoolboy Football iH^^^ HELEN HELP US By HELEN 'AND SUB BOTTEL *{ By JAY SHARBUTT V'NEW YORK AP) -- ABC- .TV, exhibiting either a fine Ironic sense or the true meaning of public service, precedes {is NFL footballshow tonight With a good, solid documentary on the hazards cf high school football. ;This ABC "Close-Up" piece is jt must-see for the parents of «hy kid who wants to play or qoes play high school football. :*i It studies questions shoved Wider the Astroturf far too long, particularly the issue of "head tackling"--driving into the tall carrier with one's head--that many doctors contend can seriously cripple. It" also takes a'lorig look'at helmet design, noting that the helmet, primarily designed to protect 'one's noodle, now has become what reporter Jules Bergman calls "an offensive weapon used to punish the opponent." E q u a l l y important, i t dwells--if only briefly--on the The Country Girls That Keep The Home Fires Burning... "HOT SUMMER IN BAREFOOT COUNTY" PLUS Lock Up Your Women, Money and Boozl "PREACH ERM AN" ?s coming qualifications required of Iiifih school football coaches, claiming that 41 states have no kind of minimum athletic standards a coach must meet before he can sally fb.rth in hope of a winning season. · - T h e show has z few flaws, including one curious segment in which Joe Namatli, the N e w York Jets' quarterback, holds forth at his summer football clinic for boys aged eight to 18. He advises them to never, ever drive into the ball carrier with their heads in making a tackle: "We don't want you hurting one another." Yet as sure as God made Woman Told To Revise Ideas About Divorce tBiiiiiiiiiiiDiiM^ October--National Restaurant Month Tim's Pizza with Schlitz Town Country Restaurant Open 24 Hrs.--7 Days Wk. Venesian Inn Hwy. 68 West -- Tontitown Open 4-9 (Closed Sunday) little green apples, you know that on any Sunday those kids can see any pro team's defensive line, including the Jets, doing exactly what he's warning the youngsters not to do. And for reasons known but to the show's producers, the gridiron studies are briefly halted towards the end for a discourse on preventing tennis injuries--I kid you not--among the young. The main thrust of the show is the problem of high school ootball injuries, and when it sticks to that it's engrossing, lighly informative, ! and, when t visits two football-crippled leys, very saddening indeed. I've no doubt a great many coaches, parents and even high school players will consider this 'Close-Up" a one-hour exaggerated alarm, and rightly point out that it fails to mention the coaches and schools trying to correct the problems it exam"les. But if it makes parents concerned enough to question the safeguards of athletic programs at the school their children attend, it will have more than served its purpose. . CHICKEN HOUSE Serving The World's Finest Fried Chicken Hwy. 71 N. Sprfngdale Dear Helen: ' My husband gets his kicks [rom belittling me. The minute anyone walks through our door, he starts in on his "stupid wife" -- how badly I cook, look, eat, talk, etc. It's his way of making an impression, He's like that about all women, calling them floozies or fools behind their backs. But he sure butters them upi to.their faces. He "undresses" them with his stares., I've heard women call him weird. He shows no affection for me, his idea being that "dames" are only good for bed. A kiss or a hug is wasted effort. H e ' s completely selfish, throws temper fits that frighten me, never compliments, expects me to jump to his commands, and never, but never must I bother him with small talk.
