Kreutzer gave up first-inning singles to Jerry Lumpe and Al Kaline, then held the Tigers hit-less until Don Demeter singled in the ninth. The triumph was his first and marked the first complete game of his career while the homer also was the first of his career.

The Senators jumped on Hank Aguirre for a run in the first on Ken Hamlin's single and Ken McMullen's triple, and as it turned out, that would have been enough. TWINS, 3 ATHLETICS 1 Jim Grant pitched a five-hit the sixth when Don Pavletich singled and Tony Perez socked a home run to give the Reds a 3-1 lead. In the Phils seventh, Alex Johnson was safe on an error and Bobby Wine walked. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, and Johnson scored on an infield out. This set the stage for Stewart's blast.

YANKEES 16, RED SOX 2 Rookie Roger Repoz, starting only his second major league game, homered, singled and hit a sacrifice fly to drive in cour runs as the New York Yankees routed Boston 16-2 behind a 25-hit attack at Boston. The Yankees completed the humiliation with an eight-run seventh inning spree in which Elston Howard hit a two-run homer. Repoz, just recalled from Toledo to supply needed punch in a line-up missing injured sluggers Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, did "just that.

He settled the issue in the fourth inning when he smashed a three-run-shot. It was Repoz' second homer in two games and his third straight hit. (AP) Will Ford last the distance in Sunday's $58,000 Firecracker 400 stock car race or will a change in engine design break a near-perfect racing season? These were the questions race experts asked Friday as me chanics and engineers tore down engines blown on the Day tona Beach International Speed way during practice and quali fications the past three days. Ford has dominated the NAS CAR circuit this year, winning 27 of the 28 events. The only race Ford didn't win was taken by a Mercury, a Ford product. Ford also has won 20 seconds and 22 third places on the circuit.

However, Fords and Mercu ry? have been experiencing an unusual amount of engine trouble here. Darel Dieringer of Charlotte, N.C., blew two Mercury engines in practice and qualifications. He qualified Thursday at 166.220 miles per hour, coasting over the finish line with a blown engine. A Ford driven by Marvin Panch of Daytona Beach, who also blew an engine, holds the highest qualification mark and inside pole position with a 171.510 time. Another Ford, driven by Fred Lorenzen of Elmhurst, 111., qualified at 171.314.
