Police say these people have taken to swiping everything from 10-foot palms to finger- size succulents. Planlnapers -are apparently folks of all ages who are caught up in the enormous gardening fad. They fill out their home collections with plants stolen from botanical gardens, corner parks, highway medians and even bars. They're both set in their ways and high- strung. But consider Alaska: I was there on business this year, and our ugly Americans treat the Eskimos and native Indians there like dirt. Those who owned the land before the "white" man's coming are now "inferiors," often not allowed in good restaurants and stores. At best, most are considered children, and at worst, theyr'e exploited and then shunned. When will we ever learn? -Ashamed American }ear American: Ugly Americans, it unfortunately seems, learn when they're forced to learn. "You bet I would,' I answered myself, "but how will I get it past my snoopy neighbors?" So I went to the closet and got an old shoe box.
