(AP) -- Country singer Merle Hagg a r d had his California crinimal record wiped clean when he was pardoned by Goy. Ronald Rea'gan in an unpublicized move in 1972, state records show. Haggard was one of 513 felons who were pardoned, received reprieves or had their sentences commuted by the Republican chief executive in the First seven years of his administration. The popular country and western entertainer was pardoned by Reagan on March 1, 1972, although the act was nev er made public before. Haggard, whose best selling record "Okie from Muskogee" made a national reputation for him, served two years on probation for second-degree burglary and escape in Kern County in 1958. A pardon restores full rights to a convicted felon, Herbert E Ellingwood, Reagan's legal at fairs secretary, said Thursday. - "A pardon restores all their civil rights and gives them a badge of rehabilitation," Elling wood said. "They don't have to report that they had a con viction and, if it comes up, they have proof they went beyond that." ; . (AP) -- A federal jury continued its deliberations today of conspiracy, assaujt and larceny charges against two leaders of the 71- day armed occupation of Wounded Knee, S.D., last year. The 12-member panel discussed the case for eight hours on Thursday, then retired for the nfght without reaching a verdict. T h e defendants, Russell Means, 35, Porcupine, S.D., and Dennis Banks, 42, St. Paul, are charged with three counts of assaulting federal officers, one of larceny and one of conspiracy. After four alternate jurors were excused on Thursday, three told newsmen they fell the prosecution had not proved a case against Means anc Banks, leaders in the American Indian Movement. The fourth alternate was not available for comment. If convicted, the two Indian leaders each face a ·maximum penalty of 40 years in prison and fines of $45,000. Banks and Means wen among some 200 armed Indiar militants who occupied ttii hamlet of Wounded Knee on tin Pine Ridge Indian Reservation on Feb. 27, 1973. They were protesting the ad ministration of tribal laws or the sprawling Oglala Sioux res ervation and the violation of In dian treaty rights. The village was surroundec by federal agents, and sporadi firelights which broke out be tween the occupiers and th federal officers left two Indian dead and nine other person wounded before the militant withdrew from Wounded Knee. California Bar Suspends Ehrlichman SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -The California Supreme Cour has ordered former presidentia adviser John D. Ehrlichma temporarily suspended fron practicing law in the state. A brief order signed o Thursday by Chief Justice Don aid Wright said Ehrlichman former President Richard Nixon's chief domestic affair adviser, was suspended bi cause he was convicted of vio lating a federal law involvin moral turpitude. The 49-year-old Ehrlichman admitted to the California ba in 1952, also has been sus pended from practicing law i his home state of Washington He now lives in Bellevue Wash. Ehrlichman was convicte earlier this year in Washington, D.C., on three counts involving a break-in at the office of Daniel Eilsberg's psychiatrist in Beverly Hills, Calif., including knowingly making false material declarations under oath to ··ledera grand jury.
