ARKANSA* SCA Plays Well Against Abilene But Falls 27-10 By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS State College of Arkansas played cwell agaiusl Abilene Christian College, the defending national NAIA champions, for about 59 minutes Saturday night at Little Rock. But In the Final 54 seconds, the Wildcats scored twice to boost their 14-10 halftime lead to a respectable 27-10 victory margin. In other Arkansas Inter- · collegiate Conference action, Emporia (Kan.) Stale downed , Arkansas Tech 20-16, while Harding beat Missouri Western , 20-10. The remaining AIC teams wore idle. Aiblene's Wilhert Monlgom-l cry netted . only 4V yards against the Bears but 24 of those covered four touchdown j runs. Montgomery, a soph-1 omorc tailback who scored 37 j touchdowns in 12 games last year, had scored on runs of five yards and 14 yards to give the Wildcats their four-point halftime lead. He carried three times and scored on a third-and-goal from the one late in the final period. That should have been it, but SCA fumbled and Abilene look over again with 18 seconds left. The Wildcats scored with one second left. Ken Stephens, SCA coach, said Abilcne's last touchdown "was for the polls, the rankings. They hadn't beat us by enough of a margin." But Stephens added, "I consider that their business." Stephens said he thought the Bears "played well under the circumstances. I was proud of the way we carried it to 'cm." The "circumstances" included an ankle injury suffered by SCA quarterback Sam Coleman in the second quarter. Stephens said, "We were .sort of trying to set them up for Sam, but be got hurt, and we had to spend the whole game running inside." State College took the opening kickoff and went 7B''yards in three plays for .its first and! only touchdown. Coleman : and' Tommy Solomon combined on aj 54-yard pass play on SCA's n c x t j possession to set up a 38-yard' field goal by Mike Dunaway. ] Arkansas'Tech had four scor-j ing opportunities and capital-' ized on three of them but that wasn't enough for the Wonder Boys to overcome the defending Great Plains champions. Quarterback Stan McClure scored first for Tech on a 12- yard run. Flanker Dan Briley caught a 4-yard pass from With 27 seconds left in the McClure.for Tech's second TD. | f ' l 'JL l _ half. Missouri Western Tom Short kicked a 33-yard held goal and added one point u- c _ . _ j j from placement. No "rod.' BOSTON (AP) -- There's no such fish as scrod in the ocean, "Yankee," the New England magazine, declares. "Scrod" was dreamed up by a Boston maitre d'.
