He lost part of his right teg in u auto accident that nearly cost his life. A 3-8 season last year cost him his Job. Throughoat Tohill's two and a half year administration, (here was a strong undertow of pressure from the small, bill very visable and vocal, knot of alumni to hire Jim Shofner, a north side kid who didn't cuss, spit tobacco and won football games. Finally, he agreed last December and the alumni considered him the best Christmas present the school ever received. Surely he would lead the Frogs out of their purple funk, as surely as he beat Ohio Stale 17 years ago with a 90-yard punt return. If he does bring off a spectacular first season it will be by the spectacular high-risk weapon of the drop- back pass; He's going for the big roll of Use dice. Foot- ballwise, it was a winning season (6-4-1) for SMU bat oh what traumas were to follow. The dreary revelations of mis-conduct on the part of Smith's football program cost the Ponies a year's probation, reduced Smith's-contract as football coach from four years to one, and prompted his removal as athletic director.
