14 Northwest Arkansas HMUS, Wed., Aug. 21. 1974 FAYETTEVILLE, A R K A N S A S Treasure Hunt Is No Joking Matter GEORGETOWN, Del. AP -- They kidded Mclvin L. Jo seph when lie headed lor Florida more than a decade ago on his first treasure hunt. Rut ho one was laughing this r u r a l town Tuesday as he deposited an estimated $2 million worth of jewels. Spanish gojtl doubloons and other treasure in a bank. Joseph, 53, and his partner, Jlelvin A. Fisher. 52, of Key West. Fla., collected the treasure over the past 11 years in a search they said has led them to a sunken Spanish galleon that may contain Hhe largest treasure ever found. Tuesday's deposit was collected from 23 si]nken wrecks off the Florida coast and only recently released by the slate, which claims 25 per cent of all finds. Both men say that, in their search of Atlantic waters, they have found the jackpot--a sunken Spanish galleon that has eluded treasure hunters for centuries. Although the slate of Florida which licensed Iheir operations, has neither confirmed nor de nied it, the partners are convinced Hhey have located the "Atocha," a Spanish galleon that sank in a 1622 hurricane with a reported 50 tons of golti and silver on board. At today's prices, the treasure could bring about $l()fl million, Fisber told a reporter. He said the treasure retrieved from the Atocha site so far is still in possession of Florida's Division of Archives, Records and History Management. Fisher estimates the yal ue at S5 million to $G million and he says he expects it to reach the hundreds of millions before salvage is completed h the next few years. · "It's been a long time people have been laughing about this,'" said Joseph, a Georgetown con tractor who "ot into Ircasun hunting as a hobby in 1962 and joined with Fisher in a part time business partnership sev eral years later. . In Iheir search (or lh Atocha, Fisher said the pail spent five years researching his orical references to the . ship.
