And they are certain "The Man with the Golden Gun" will again soothe heir ears with the ring.of Hie box-office cash register. Meanwhile, cameras churn on in the casinos at Macao, on he canals of Bangkok and on emote "James Bond Island" off the coast of Thailand, all lot pursuit of heretofore unbeatable formulas: first, "create an atmosphere of belief in surroundings of utter improbability," and second, top the ast Bond extravaganza with more of everything. "We've got to give the viewer vicarious trip," says film publicity chief Charles Juroe nervously puffing on a four-inch cigar. To - avoid the risk of viewer ennui each trip must be different from the previous one. With the exception of the rather Westernized Japanese background 'of "You. Only Live Twice," the East is virgin terri tory for Bond followers. To play up the exotic Orienl angle. But unlike drive-ins, Bonanza is a haven for fathers. First, you don't eat at Bonanza. You dine here. You have your food at a table, like a decent human being. Not in a car like a sardine. Second you eat what you want. Not what your kids want. You can choose from all kinds of steak, shrimp, and fish dinners, And because your kids are entitled to a choice, too, they can have Hamburger, French fries and a soft drink, or a Highway 71 Carry special kiddy-sized dinner. Finally, Bonanza has nice little rules. For example, there's no tipping. And you can drink as many cups of coffee as you like and pay for only one cup. Now, if Bonanza can give you all this in a restaurant, at drive-in prices, why eat at a drive-in? The family restaurant even a father could love. In the gadgets and gimmicks epartment, the producers romise, among other things, omething with cars that has ever been done on film." It all comes to an end on a ugged island off Thailand but I'm not going to tell you ending, love," says Juroe, om under a cloud of cigar moke. He does soften the sus- ense a bit: "Bond has become ,ylized. like a matador estern hero. You know he's upposed to win, to survive he trick is to keep putting him itb more intricate and bizarre tuations from which he can icape." The Bond of "Golden Gun" i lean, handsome actor looking ; least a decade younger than '17 years. Moore has one ond movie behind him and fol tws Sean Cannery, who hung P his white dinner jacket am eretla sidearm after seven hns. ' Co-producer Albert R. Brcc men, says Moore is closer to the conception of Bond's crea- or novelist Ian Fleming. Con- icry's Bond was 'a "rough diamond," a physical man who eemed lo reu'sh knocking off lis opponents. Moore's is the polished, iChool tie, Etonian type, Ihor- mghly professional and charm- ng, Broccoli said. "I made Bond close to my own personality," Moore said on location in Bangkok. "Some hings 1 leave out, like my filthy sense of humor. But some .hings don't cliange about Bend. Toward women, he's still rat, a male chauvinist pig with great charm." Many members of the production crew have been witli Eon Productions since 1%3, when the company came oul with its first film, "Dr. No." A $5TMillion budget, plus constant pressure to anticipate what the public will pay for at Ihe box office, said Juroe, means you can't fool around. "A new group of kids are seeing the Bond movies now," said Broccoli "We're fortunate lo have a new generation of connoisseurs. This pattern exists, but only with the Bond pictures." Plans are already in the works for another film from the Fleming novel "Moonraker.' The company also has the rights to manufacture new Bond titles once Fleming's buoks are filmed up.
