Frank Winn presented testimony by t h e - l a t e Ashley County Sheriff Guy Mormon and Mormon's chief deputy, J. B. Stell, which described Mrs. Degges' home after her disappearance on Sept. 24, 1964. Parts of t h e testimony described signs of a struggle in the living room and bedroom of the Degges home. Summations are expected to jegin in the case today. · Williams was.convicted of the charge in 1964 and placed on death row. But h i s sentence was commuted by the late former Gpv. Winthrop Rockefeller. The state Supreme Court later ordered a new trial contending that t h e r e was discrimination r the selection of an all-wtiite ury. CBS News says it is airing live TV coverage of Nixon's departure from the White House, starting at 9:24 a.m. EDT, and Ford's swearing-in at 11:54 a.m. EDT. ABC and NBC announced similar schedules. The Public Broadcasting Service, serving 246 public TV stations, said it'Was airing a 3'/4-hour special on the resignation at 8 p.m. EDT. Nixon's speech was carried live by the nearly 650 TV stations and 2,700 radio stations comprising the three networks, public broadcasting and the Mutual Broadcasting System. On Sept. 23, 1952, when he made his famous "Checkers" CHECKERS SPEECH speech, only NBC televised the 30-minute address^-- seen by an estimated 50 million viewers. CBS and Mutual aired it on radio. While,^pn-.i patrol, Officer Randy Carmack spotted Danny Duane West and thought he recognized him as a deserter from the Marine Corps. , Carmack entered the .71 Truck -Stop where West -was playing pinball and asked West to step outside.. West replied'he. would after he finished his game, police reports said. Carmack had to forcibly lead West from -the'building. At the ear Carmack.instructed West to place his hands against the vehicle. West began to walk off, Carmack said. At this time, West allegedly began fighting Carmack. Carmack was struck on.the; face, head, arm and leg. Another -officer arrived.at the soeneVan'd after 10 minutes, the police were able to subdue West. He was then taken to the city jail. Lawrence Dawson of 'Pine 'Bluff s a i d Thursday that he couldn't preside in a lawsuit over a planned timber cut by the state Game and Fish Commission in the Bayou Meto Wildlife Management Area. Chancellor Eugene S. Harris of Pine Bluff has disqualified himself from the case because of a conflict of interest and said he would ask Dawson to hear the :eyidence. -Dawson'-said he would be unable to handle the case because of his crowded docket. He said he has sent a letter to the state Judicial Department requesting that a special judge be appointed. A group of Southeast Arkansas sportsmen filed suit against the commission to prevent the proposed timber cul which they claim would harm the area's wildlife habitat.
