, Column ·r ML BOTLK New York - (ff) - "The reason there are so many songwriters," Kid Steve Allen, who is one him- eelf, "is because it doesn't take long to write a song and because It doesn't, take any talent." Allen estimates amateur songwriters comprise a larger group with special interests than any other, except possibly horse players. "for almost all of these people, there is no hope -that their songs will ever be published," he continued. "There is no other field so firmly closed to newcomers. There's about one chance in 100,000 that an amateur's song will be published." Allen is pretty well qualified on a number of scores to discuss the problem of the unsung, unpublished songwriter. For one thing he's master of ceremonies of a network television show, "Songs for Sale." Each week the songs of four unknowns are chosen for presentation, and each is given an expensive, elaborate production with vocals by a big-name singer. "That," said Allen, "will.giv you some idea of the problems-and remember that most of thcs have been good songs. Most ama teur songs aren't good." The show now is receiving be tween 1,500 and 2,000 song manu scripts each week, a figure whic occasionally rises as high as 5,000 Of these, about onj per cent ar culled as possibilities. The rest ar returned with a polite rejcctioi slip. The one ner cent is furthe whittled. Farmington Mrs. Alvin Andrews was hon ored Tuesday night at 7:30 wit a pink and blue shower. Mrs. 'L.
