LAST BIG WEEK "AMERICAN GRAFFITI" --Plus-III 'LAST SUMMER" As Weil As Hostages Radio WASH Talks Four Days With Covicts By JAY SHARBUTT NEW YORK (AP) - News taffers at radio station WASH n Washington, D.C.. may still lave a bud case of telephone ear. But they h a v e a good reaon: four days ot talks with two onvicts holding terrified hos- ages at gunpoint. When the talking started at :05 p.m. on July 11, WASH lews director Bill McCIoskey : recalled, somewhat incred-l ilously, he heard the convicts'! 'negotiating back and forth-on vhat their press policy would re." The men, Frank Gorham Jr. and Robert N. Jones, earlier lad seized eight hostages at a cellblock in a federal court house in Washington. Through newsmen, the convicts demanded freedom-in return for their captives' safe release. They freed one hostage Friday. The other seven escaped Sunday and the convicts were recaptured Monday night after a Shootout with police in which no one was hit. McCIoskey said his station was the first to contact the convicts during the tense, potentially bloody ordeal* He said-he looked in trie phone book, found a number for the cellblock and simply called up. Once he had the men on the phone, the station didn't relinquish the line unless the convicts ,or hostages requested it. WASH got off the line for good Sunday at the request of federal officers, he said. The' cellblock : had three phones, he added, "and at one lime' we wore talking simultaneously .on .all,-three, to..either hostages or convicts. Once we realized that, we' hung "Dp one of them because we never wanted to block the authorities' access to the cellblock by phone." He said WASH, when the convicts or hostages consented, taped interviews Avith them for its news broadcasts, but either offered the talks live for other newsmen who came to the station or replayed the .taped'con- versations for them. Atler the 105-hour drama ended. Deputy Ally. Gen. Laurence Silberman said t h a t to avert bloodshed "the main thrust of our strategy was to keep them (the convicts) talking and our main ally was the press." McCIoskey, who said WASH opt its five-member news staff vorbing in shifts to k e e p ' i t s ellblock line open, noted that vhen the convicts asked the tation to hang up "they always ailed us back."
