Government Aid Bill For PBS Goes To Congress In 'The Trial Of It. Calley f ···' WASHINGTON (AP) _ A bill endorsed by President Nixon to " give the nation's public broad., casting system much more federal money and on a long-range ,- basis .for the first time has ·^ been'sent lo Congress; The bill, product of a two- year struggle, would provide for five years o f ' f i n a n c i n g at the rate of $1 for each $2.50 the p u b l i c broadcasters raise, matching up to 45 per cent of the funds they get from nonfe- deral sources. . It was - a victory for Clay Whitchead, director of the White House Office of Telecommunication Pplicy, w h o sent the bill to Congress Tuesday after ienuatii.ig Nixon to endorse it. Nixon had rejected It earlier, sources said. The government would deposit in a new "Public Broadcasting Fund" to be established in the Treasury up to $70.mil- lion for the fiscal year 1976, SMORGASBORD LUNCH ALL THE PIZZA Now Mon. thru Fri. 11-2 which starts next July 1. $80 million for fiscal 1977, $90 million for fiscal 1978, $95 million for fiscal 1979 and $100 million for fiscal 1980. This compares with $5 million provided in 1909. the first year of federal financing, and $GO million proposed this year, the second year of a two-year authorization. The proposal is a compromise between the White House, the Public Broadcasting Corporation, which handles fed eral funds, and the Public Broadcasting Service, which provides the network, for the educational stations. The corporation still is seeking $100 million the first year, rising to $200 million the fifth year.
