On Reserve Status Soap Opera Star Doubles As Navy Bomber Pilot By JAY SHARBUTT NEW YORK (AP -- If CBS 1 "Guiding Light" troupers ever decided to wage war on soap opera critics, they'd have no . trouble getting their own air force together. They'd just call on Don Stewart. He' plays a defense attorney on the daytime series, but once was a Strategic Air Command B47 bomber pilot. He also used to fly single-engine A4 attack bombers for the Navy. The hearings began in June after U.S. District Court Judge J. Smith Henley received numerous petitions charging that conditions in the unit were unconstitutional. The hearings were recessed after several days of testimony from inmates and some testimony from' witnesses for the defense. The prison administration had been scheduled lo complete its defense when the hearings resumed Monday and the case then was to have been submitted to Henley. Henley, however, revealed Monday that he had received letters from inmates describing incidents of brutality that al- legely had occurred since the recess. He suggested that t h e inmate plaintiffs testify about the incidents. Tile hearings will resume at a later date.
