Petersen has described as a "little heavy handed" a suggestion he said was made by President Nixon that he act as While House counsel while heading the original Watergate investigation. Petersen, who is head of the department's Criminal Division, said the topic arose dur- ng conversations with the President in April of 1973. "There were statements, during the course of the President's conversations with me, 'Now, you'll have to serve as White House counsel, 1 or 'You're the adviser lo the President now,' which I, frankly, thought was a lillle heavy handed," said Petersen. He made Ihe disclosure to the Watergate grand jury in testimony which T h u r s d a y . Judiciary Committee. While Peterson has acknowledged giving Nixon some information about the investigation, he said he determined certain information he had was a grand jury matter and therefore was not to be divulged. Nixon, he said, "pointed out that he didn't expect to get grand jury information and we, of course, agreed to that." was released by the House O tew Ft "What's happened to us, George? Nixon Aides Attack Tactics Of Investigators WASHINGTON (AP) -- Pres! dent Nixon's aides are re- ponding to a now surge of Wa- crgale-relaled disclosures with lard-line attacks on the tactics of those investigating the President. Sources said the aides -- and perhaps Nixon himself -- have lecided for now to forego any substantive point-by-pbint pubic response to fresh allegations against the President. One official said Nixon's key aides had grown weary of 'being put in a position of constantly denying" charges raised ay Watergate investigator; "and trying to prove a negative." Thus,-neither Press Secretary Ronald.L. Ziegler or his deputy, Gerald L. Warren, would respond Thursday to the substance .of the most recent dis closures by the House Judiciary Committee, which released seven volumes of Watergate eyi dence, or the Senate Watergate Committee, which issued a staff report suggesting cam paign funds were used for Nix on's personal benefit. But both ashed out at how the new dis- losures were made. Ziegler said "it is mort than i coincidence" that the two :ommittees' disclosures came almost back-to-back, charging t was "a calculated effort at piling on as many charges as mssible in an effort to manipu- ate public opinion." Later, Warren launched an attack on still a third body investigating Nixon -- the staff of he Watergate special prosecutor.
