22 Northwest Arkansas TIMES. Wed., July 10. 1974 FAYETTKVILLI, ARKANSAS WiMiamson Joins* ABC Football ,,.. By JAY SHARBUTT ,.-... AP Television Writer NE W YORK (AP) -- Fred Williamson says ho left pro football in 1968 "because it became work. The fun left the game. It was time for me to gel on to something different, something new, more exciting." .Now, at 36, the former star defensive back for Kansas City is back in football, the TV variety which demands a far harsher daily preparation than 100 push-ups, four-mile runs and crackback drills. "I think I'll go home and swim a lot in my pool and maybe visit a few discotheques," he replied dead pan when asked about summer training plans for his new job on ABC's "NFL Monday Night Football" show. The revelation came at a gathering here in which Williamson, A black action-adventure movie star and TV person- ality, was Introduced as next season's mikeside colleague of Frank Gilford and Howard Cosell. . The previous colleague, ex- Cowboy quarterback Don Meredith, decamped this year after four ABC seasons .to go work for NBC both as a Sunday football' sportscasler and television thespian. Unlike Dandy Don, who came to broadcasting direct from football, Williamson is joining ABC's play-byplay platoon more because of his acting and TV talk show activities than those of the pigskin variety. A tall, lean native of Gary, Ind., and possessor of a degree in architectural engineering, Williamson got his TV career going as Diahann Carroll's love interest in the old "Julia" series. Before that, he says, he.brief- ly . owned two architecture" firms in San Francisco and Toronto, but. closed them "when I decided I wanted to get into something a little more lucrative." Williamson, speaking in a pregame, postpress conference interview, said he decided on acting as a means to that end after watching the "Julia show: "I fi'gured they needed somebody as masculine and handsome as she was feminine. Art Instead Of Ads To Adorn Billboards WESTPORT, Conn. (AP) -Tired of billboards lliat lell you to buy something?; Relict is coming to some Connecticut cities in the form of huge, colorful paintings posted just for enjoyment. Artist Ann Chorhow lias won a stale .grant to provide bill: board sized enlargements of paintings by himself and two other artists. "For years I've been concerned about the growing blight of the environment and, was frustrated 1 about being able to do nothing," said Mrs. Chernow, 38. Using a $2,000 grant from the Connecticut' Foundation on the Arts, Mrs. Chcrnow and a Stratford sign company are working together to put art on public display near bus sta- :ions,' community centers, any place where people congregate. The plan never has been tried on a mullicity scale in the United States, Mrs. Chernow said in an interview. Huge paintings have 'been done on city buildings in New York City and elsewhere but they cannot be changed as signs can. The first paintings will - be posted on existing 6-by-12-fpot billboards on inner-city build ings in five state locations, she said. The artists and sponsors do- nalc much of their time and expense to the project under ,erms of the grant. · ' Mrs. Chernow hit' on the art for-all idea while working on paintings for her current one- person show at the Silvermine Guild, where she teaches. Sh'e also instructs at Norvvalk Com'-' munity Artists Paul Camacho of Easton and Ben Johnson of Bridgeport will work with Mrs. Chernow, ( producing a wide range of styles and subjects in- the billboard show.
