Order issued against addressee or violation of false representation law." It's all part of a little-known consumer protection program which the Postal Service estimates saves Americans v more than $100 million ·annually^ i';*·'· Since 1972, the agency has issued more than 200 mail-stop orders against firms found guilty of false representation in advertising. The action often puts them out of business. The ads, most often placed in tabloid newspapers and he-man magazines, appeal to members of both sexes yearning for youth, beauty, health, virility or success. The cases often involve sex stimulants, bustline rincreasers, veight loss and weight gain schemes, land sales, beauty p r o d u c t s , vitamins, phony schools and hair-growing po- .ions. "It's Just amazing what you can sell through the mails," says a senior Postal Service of- Icial. "People'will buy almost anything." -Until a few years ago, the Postal'Service, had to prove in- lent'to get a fraud conviction. Now it only has to establish that the advertising for a product was false to get a stop-mail order and accomplish the same end. The ad can be in newspapers magazines, radio or tele vis ion just as long as it seeks to have the money sent through the mails. "The purpose of this law Is not to punish people; it's tc 'protect the public," said Adam This program was assisted in part by grant-in-aic! from the National Endowment for the Arts, through the Office of Arkansas State Arts and Humanities of the Department of Planning. Friday. The "Petite Messe Solen- elle" was 'written in Paris, icre Rossini spent the last 13 ears of his life. The title, tiich translates as "Little olemn Mass," is something of n enigma, as It Is by no cans a small svork, Professor rothers said. "The work lasts r ell over an hour, much too mg to be used liturgically; It s only for the concert hall," e said. The mass is one of Rossini's nest creations, serious and incere, romantic and operatic n the best sense of both words, Jrothcrs added.
