NEW YORK (AP) -- On July 1914, Harry Houdini stood on ho stage of a Manhattan theater and announced that lie vould walk through a solid irick wall. Ho then proceeded to do just hat. Or so it appeared. A huge carpet was spread ivor. the stage to dispel suspi- "iqn of trap doors. A team of iricklayers built a wall of jricks and mortar, eight feet ugh and ten feet long, on' a iteel beam. starring , MALCO CINEMA 0: HWY. 71 N.tBOUINO HILLS 521-1920 Open 7:00 Fet. 7:10 and 9:15 Sun. Mat. 2 p.m. Hoadirus Secret: The Art Of Misdirection People were called from the audience to stand on the edges of the carpet and encircle the wall to guard against Houdini slipping around one end, The top of the wall could be seen by all. . , · | Small folding screens were placed on each side of the wall and the magician stepped behind one, raised his hand above the screen, and called "I'm going. . .going.. , I'm gone!" , . A drum roll from the orchestra and an instant later, from the other side, Houdini called, "Here I am," and stepped out from behind the second screen. Out of that performance grew the legend of the' man who could walk through walls emerge after being buried in a coffin and esc ape. from prisons packing cases thrown deep into rivers, straitjaekets and any kind of fetter known to man. Along with the'legend grew a conviction that the short intense magician with the sharp piercing eyes possessed an all- encompassing secret which en abled him to perform his miracles. Houdini did little to dispel the notion. MYTH DEVELOPS Houdini 'died on Halloween, 1926, and with his death there developed another myth, that on the 100th anniversary of his birth on April 6, 1874, his lawyer would open a small box containing ,his secrets and make them'known to the world. As 1974 approached, people began calling newspapers and asking when the box would be opened. April 6 came and went and no lawyer spoke. Houdini's lawyer, B.M.L! Ernst, died in 1938 and Milbourne Christopher, an · authority on Houdini's life, says Ernst told Kim before he died that he never found any such box. In fact, there was no box and no great secret. Houdini was a great showman, a resourceful and talentr magician, an expert on locks and a - p e r f o r m e r who never exhibited in the theater lobby ook- chances, though he may aVe appeared to do so. He was master at the art of mis- irection, making an audience hink one thing was happening hen actually something else as happening. As an example, Houdini usually could get out of a locked afe on a stage within a minute r so. But that would make it ook too easy. To heighten drama, he would sit behind his creen for 10, 15 or 20 minutes almly reading a book. Just at he right moment he would tagger from behind his cur- ain, gulping lungfuls of air. FAVORITE STUNT One of his favorite stunts was o challenge the local carpen- ers' union to build a packing ase from which he could not escape. The case usually was The Crowning Touch to a Hot Springs Summer ' From July 10-13, the most beautiful girls in Arkansas will gather at the Hot Springs.Convention Auditorium to vie for the title of Miss Arkansas and the right to represent our state at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City. If you can afford to feed your family at a drive-in, you can afford to take them to Bonanza. Like drive-ins, Bonanza isn't expensive. But unlike drive-ins, Bonanza is a haven for fathers. First, you don't eat at Bonanza. You dine here. You have your food at a table, like a decent human being. Not in a car like a sardine. Second you eat what you want. Not what your kids want. You can choose from all kinds of steak, shrimp, and fish dinners. And because your kids are entitled to a choice, too, they can have Hamburger, French fries and a soft drink, or a Highway 71 Carry special kiddy-sized dinner. Finally, Bonanza has nice little rules. For example, there's no tipping. And you can drink as many cups of coffee as you like and pay for only one cup. Now, if Bonanza can give you oil this in a restaurant, at drive-in prices, why eat at a drive-in? The family restaurant even a father could love.
