Tass announced. The announcement did not indicate whether there were plans to put a crew aboard later. The Soviet news agency said the Flight was being made for "further work on perfection of the station's design, its onboard systems, equipment and for scientific-technical research and experiments in s p a c a flight." "The on-board systems of th» station are functioning normally," Tass said. The last Salyut night by the Russians, in April 1973, apparently ended in failure, and was considered a serious setback to the Soviet space program. That space station, Salyut 2. w a s launched on April 3, and 25 days later Tass announced conclusion of the flight without a crew having been put anoairt. Western specialists monitoring the flight said the spaceship had broken up in space. It appeared obvious that t h » liming of the new Soviet space flight only two days before President Nixon's arrival in. Mo:cow was not just a coincidence.
