He has a gruff voice and sometimes wears a scowl, but these are just a. cover for the fact that he's really a very gentle person, who takes ple.i- sure in seeing people e n j o y themselves. Where else can you pull ff the road to stretch your legs nd, at the same time, ride a miniature railroad, tour a zoo. 0 on a pony ride, play games 1 an arcade, do a little shop ng and dine on a gourmet am sandwich? In 1938, he went into th construction business and later established the expansive H.C Ormand Supply Col., Inc. whic produced railroad ties and lum her. The HCO Cattle Ranch another of his endeavors ai at an age when most men thir, about retiring, Ormand is sti going strong. In 1972, Ormand purchased 2 acres of land in a crescent Hwy. 65 overlooking beautifi Hartsugg Valley. He ha always loved this scenic -.it and for the past 20 years ha visualized a meaningful use To it. In March. 1973. he .starts construction on the rest sto and. as in all that he doe* has settled for nothing less tha foing first class. Travelers arriving at Hallie' are greeted by the U.S. an Arkansas flags flying big above a little red train tha chugs its way around the per meter of the rest stop. O mand's fascination with train goes back to his early railron career, and he hunted until h found just the right miniatur engine and cars for his HC Railroad. The train carries about . passengers and, leaving Gran Central Station, goes beside th highway, through a tunnel an across high trestles over a dee gorge. Ivian and Joe Fraser of Clinn are general managers of e rest stop and oversee |he rge gift shop that includes uch items as glassware, toys, laps, candles, Ozark souveni-.'S nd, of course, engineer caps, he Frasen also sell tickets for train ride and direct assengers to the sheltered lading point behind the shop. The adjoining sandwich shop socializes in sandwiches filled ith a quarter pound of. hic- ory-smoked ham sliced thin nd stacked high. Hamburgers ot dogs and smoked summer ausage can be eaten in the ining room or at a shaded pic ic area outside. Hallie's arcade next to the andwich shop is filled with pin all machines, games and uke box. To the north of the rcade is the pony ride are; nd a campground which wil ccommodate 40 to 51) campers The rest ttop property drop: ff sharply behind the building: nd camping area and extends o the base of a seemingly bob pmless hollow. Here amid hugi ichen-covered boulders and in\ lardwoods Ormand is buitdini a zoo. The rocky landscape : a natural habitat for wild ani nals, and he is fashioning ; bear den, a goldfish pond am fish pond stocked wit! channel cat. He is busy buyin, a variety of animals for th zoo and presently has a sma nenagerie of black bear, mon keys, goats, d e e r , raccoons iquirrels, fowl and a red fox Another attraction of the 70 will be a small cave that i part of the hollow. Ormand has many futu plans for Hallie's Rest Stop ome Mill lecret and some in he process. He is currently ooking "lor the prettiest merry-go-round in the country" nd also for an old-fashioned alliope. His goal for the rest top is to "specialize in cleanli- ess and serve the best sandwiches found anywhere". Or mand purchased the entire ownsite and 5.000 adjoining acres several years after it was abandoned by the railroad ir 946. Elba is reached by an ok WPA dirt road which joins Hwy. 110 from Shirley. Hidden away in the Little Red River Valley beneath Half Moon Mountain, Elba seems like a forgotten, enchanted world. A crystal clear stream rushes a!ong the valley floor through the town and is bordered on one side by thick timberland and on the other side by owering bluffs with gigantic rock formations.
