If I start working part-time now. how much can I earn and still get my full social security payments each month? 'A. For. thp year 1974. you'll get your f u l l ' social security benefits, no mailer how much you earn each month, if your total earnings for the year do not go over $2,400. Regardless of your yearly earnings, you'll get your full benefit for any month you don't earn over J2(W and do not do substantial work in your own business. Q. I understand there are certain circumstances under which a widow can get 100 per cent of her husband's monthly social security benefits. Can you tell me when this is possible? A. Yes. A widow can get her husband's full monthly benefit amount if she wails until slip's 65 or over to apply, and if her husband never received reduced monthly social security ments. If you need more infor- malion about widow's benefits under social security, call your social securily office. Q. I get a monthly Civil Scr- vte pension based on my service with the Federal government. I've also worker! in a .fnh covered by social security long enough so that I can get monthly social security retirement payments. Can I get social security benefits as well as mv Civil Service pension? A. Yes. the Civil Service Retirement Act and the S o c i a l Security Act are separate plans. Even if you pet b e n e f i t 5 under the Civil Service Retirement Act, you can also get monthly payments under social securily if you work long enough under Social Security. Q. I get monthly social security checks as a widow. I was married to my husband for ovnr 30 years before he died. My next door neighbor w a s only married to her husband for 10 years when he died and she gets a much bigger check from social security every month than I do. Can you explain why? A. Widow's benefits under Iho social securily program depend on a husband's average earnings In work covered by social security. The length of lime you lived wilh your husband before his death has no hearing on Ihe benefit amount. Your neighbor's husband apparently had a much higher earnings average than your husband, which would account for tbe larger monthly payments. Q. T thought that couples were supposed lo gel S210 a month under the new Supplementary Security Income Program. HoweVer, when my wife and I went to the social security office, they told us we'll get only $147. Can you tell roe why? A. Under Ihe Supplemental Security Income Program, the Federal payment to a couple may be as much as $210 a month, but this amount is reduced if the couple has other income.
