Norrhwwl Arkamw TIMB, Friday, May 10, 1974 'AYBTTIVILU. AMAMM II And Interest Rates Forecasters Look For Decline In Inflation By JOHN CUNN1FF NEW YORK (AP) _ The standard or consensus forecast made up of the views of private and government forecasters, seems to favor a decline in the rate of inflation and interest rates later this year. In the recent past those hopes remained unfulfilled, so forecasters are under greater pressure now to state their case in specifics rather than generalities. Here are some of the specifics that support their view: --Much of (he huge increase m oil has now worked its way through the production process » the point of sale. H is unlike- y that any future increases will be of the same magnitude. --Commodity price increases although they continue, aren' of the same magnitude as the' were during the past year. --The world's harvests show signs of being more abundan :han in the pasl year or so, in cheating some lessening of prea sure on food prices. --Removal of price controls while it might cause some im mediate p r i c e increases, wil tend to make some product more available and thus caus a levelling of prices over a pc iod of months. --There are indications that age and benefit settlements in najor labor contracts are like- y to be only moderate, a reac ion to an anticipated rise ir he unemployment rate. --Inflation and shrinking buy- ng power is likely to convince nany consumers that spending or big ticket items should be postponed. But there's still another side of the forecasts. A lot of hope still lies at the root of those assumptions, nourishing an op imism that isn't shared by all. Critics of the consensus point out that: --Harvests tend to be unpre dictable. While the United States can look forward to record wheat harvest, for ex ample, can the same be said a all the world's wheat and rice producers? Moreover, the increased de mands for foods relied a long term situation--the rise In th world's population, couplec with a desire for more nutr tional balance throughout th world. --Nobody can say for sure what effect the removal price controls will have. Some ounced are in reas. steel and or example, f the Increases already an very basic automobiles r __. which affec ices of other goods and serv ices. --Despite high interest rates Dusiness continues to lay plan or massive spending on plar and equipment. While thi might make them more produc ive, more efficient over th ong term, it could add to in lation and interest rates thi year. --Some economists doubt tha wage demands will remai moderate, especially since th suying power of wage earner is declining. They are, in fac surprised at labor's stance. TERMITES?
