Review By David Zimmerman Gannett News Service "jj II Km ASHVILLE One of country's most- anticipated albums ever has been released from Shania Twain, the superstar siren who has bro eight top singles and sold 9 million copies, becoming the top-selling country album ever by a woman and putting Twain on a par with stars like Marian Carey and Alanis Morissette. Despite its long genesis. Twain says, the new album was easier than the last.

"On the last one we didn't have any direction. We were paying more attention to it being accepted, trying to balance that with what was going to make us satisfied." This time she and Lange pushed boundaries but kept in touch with the tough-minded vocal "personality" embodied in hits like "I'm Outta Here" and "Any Man of Mine." "We were trying to make sure we weren't going to get completely kicked out of town." Twain says. "I'm not sure what's right and wrong (in country music), but everybody talks about it all the time, and it gets you paranoid. "This one's just freer. The cloud sort of lifted, because we know now what the fans like.

I listened to my fan mail and got as much feedback as I possibly could. That's what gave us the guidelines." Shania Twain pushed the country envelope with her last album. With "Come on Over" (Two stars out of four) she rips it, tears it, shreds it. The album's generous 16 songs ride on distinct, contagious percussion patterns that often override or negate the lyrics. (Remember when words were the backbone of country?) This is mostly slick pop.

songs focused on one-note emotions and attitudes, dolled up with danceable druniplay. There are some country-type things happening, as in "Honey I'm Home." a cutesy song with references to pantylines. PMS and flat hair. But where Twain's last album seemed a pop producer's respectful nod to tradition, this seems cynically aimed at getting past country-radio programmers. Maybe we're just cranky.

Then again, who started the trend that led Barbara Man-drell to bare her navel on the CMA Awards? ken most of the genre's cardinal rules. She's perhaps the only country star who has ever declined to tour, and she has given only one truncated public concert. But for "Come on Over," she'll hit the road next year. No start date has been announced. The music on this outing, produced by husband Robert John "Mutt" Lange (ACDC.

Bryan Adams), continues to be considerably more rocking and high-tech than most of what's on country radio, but it seems to work. Debut single "Love Gets Me Every Time" shot to No. 1 in Billboard. Most country stars birth an album every year. But Twain, now managed by Jon Landau (Bruce Springsteen), kept the industry and fans waiting more than 2Vi years for the follow-up to her blockbuster "The Woman in Me." That Grammy-winner spawned 5 li" Shania Twain received the Top Selling Album award at the Canadian Country Music Awards in September for 'The Woman in Her latest release, 'Come On is now available in stores.
