SPORTS Roanoke Times Wbrid News SECTION MONDAY MORNING EB 22 1988 Clemson beats reeling Cavaliers 65 62 CITYSTATE CLASSIIED ADS By DOUG DOUGHTY Sportswriter CLEMSON SC After losing six games in a row Clemson found a basketball team Sunday with even more problems than its own The Tigers pulled away to a 14 point lead in the second half then held on for a 65 62 victory over a Virginia team that was minus point guard John Johnson Johnson who had started 55 of the previous 56 games was suspended from the team Saturday after he tested positive for drugs Johnson a senior who was averaging 156 points per game and is third on all time assists list is not ex pected to play again think fair to coach Terry Holland said are no second chances? watching as his col lege career came to an ignominious end think gained respect just by playing said Johnson a senior who was suspended from the team for the season after failing a drug test for being the person I am is not something discussed Basketball is secondary right now The most im portant thing is to get back on the right Johnson said he learned of the suspension Saturday morning at which point he addressed his teammates before joining them for a plane trip to Clemson where UVa lost Sunday 65 62 I was Johnson said wanted to play a lot but I want the other players to get that feeling I there to play I was there to support them would be different if I only let myself down but I let a lot of other people down My mother is the only thing I can think about right Coach Terry Holland said Johnson was taken on the trip out of consideration for his feelings but indicated he would not continue to travel with the team a crisis situation the family is where you turn and the team is his two goals to stay alive the high powered American offense fizzled and West Germa ny advanced to the medal round with a 4 1 victory The loss was a bitter disappointment for the Amer icans who were seeking vindication after finishing sev enth in the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo Yugoslavia in defense of their 1980 gold medal Now they must win a final game in the consolation round just to match their finish know disappointed but I know there are other young men out there who will want to wear the USA US coach Dave Peterson said came in feeling that the three wins we needed would be against Austria Norway and West Germany We came that close disappointed but not the end of the West Germany (4 1) joins Czechoslovakia (3 2) and the undefeated Soviet Union as the pool representa tives in the medal a 2 3 record the victories coming against the only winless teams in their pool Austria and Norway kids came in here to play and played very very well and got nothing to be ashamed Peterson said said is expected to publicly support Hokies basketball coach rankie Allen who was arrested in Salem and charged with drunken driving last riday at a news con ference today at 2 pm Braine said Saturday that the incident would not affect an ticipated contract signing But Braine said Sunday that there will be no announcement re garding contract during the news conference at Jamerson Athletic Center Allen first year coach is expected to sign a four year pact later this week A news conference for that an nouncement is planned for this Braine said conference regards what hap pened last Allen was arrested after run ning his leased car into a power pole at Dalewood Avenue and Sunset Ave nue about 12:45 am Allen was charged with refusing to take a breath test that would determine the percentage of man who left Rich mond airgrounds Raceway a win ner late Sunday afternoon was Neil Bonnett The real race began long after the checkered flag had flown signal ing the end of one of the longest and certainly the most confusing events ever staged on old 542 mile oval And when NASCAR at the re quest of Rudd and Petty did a dou ble check of its scorecards Bonnett had won that chase too never had any doubt about it" Bonnett said following his first NASCAR Winston Cup triumph since October 1986 at Rockingham NC fact I had a question too about the scoring I thought we had a lap on the But Rudd
