But as far as Ballesteros is concerned, those numbers mean exactly zilch. "This is the Open and has nothing to do with any other tournament," he said flatly.

"This is a great golf course and there is still a long way to go. The one thing I would like to see is for the conditions continue very much like today tough." Most of the field was prepared for even tougher conditions, particularly alter a major rainstorm had been forecast to hit Thursday morning. Instead, the day was dry enough that players doffed their protective jackets, and a 16-year-old girl dolfed all her clothes before hugging Jose Maria Olazabal and streaking the first green. The afternoon round was more difficult than the morning; of the 17 players who broke 70, only four, including Ballesteros, did it with afternoon starting times. "We obviously lucked out with the weather," said Faldo, who turned 34 Thursday.

"You try to take advantage of that, and I'm happy I turned around a day that was hard work into something constructive." Some prominent players who didn't included U.S. Open champion Payne Stewart and Fred Couples, who shot 72s, and Olazabal and Greg Norman, who had 74s. Meanwhile, veterans Curtis Strange and Jack Nicklaus stayed in good position with even par 70s, while Lanny Wadkins and Ben Crenshaw had 71s. After shooting one under par 33 on the front nine, Ballesteros birdied the 395 yard, par-4 10th tyile with a six-foot putt, gave it back with a bogey at the 475-yartl, par-4 13th, then birdied the 199-yard par-3 14th with a 3-iron ada20-l'ootputt. 12 He bogeyed the par-5 15th, vVhere he pulled his second shot irjto deep rough and was forced to make a four footer for a six. Ballesteros parred the 16th, and then, with the wind at his back, crushed a 375-yard drive on the par-5 17th. lie hit a 9-iron to six-feet and made the putt for an eagle. On the 472-yard par-4 18th, also playing downwind.

Ballesteros drove with a 4-iron and hit a 7-iron 45 feet short of the pin. As he was lining up what he intended to be a lag putt to the hole, his caddy, Billy Foster, said, "Make it. sometimes strange things happen." The ball, hit with perfect speed, dropped into the center of the cup as the grandstands surrounding the green exploded in approval. "I holed it. it was a strange tiling." said Ballesteros.

RedlanOs, CA 92373 714-792-1411 719.2,82,9 (t5) 2324 ANA RAMIREZ ORDER TO SHOW CAUSE RE CHANGE OF NAME (1277C.C.P.) CASE NUMBER 2M734 SUPERIOR COURT OF CALIFORNIA, COUNTY OF SAN BERNARDINO, Central District, 35) North Arrowhead Avenue, San Bernardino, CA 92415-0210 In RE Ttie Change Of Name Of: ANTHONY RAY ADELANTO This was one of those infamous Cal League games where no lead was safe. Someone should have shouted before the game, "Women and children first!" It was that bad. But after almost blowing a 9-2 lead, the Mavericks held on for a 20-9 win over the Salinas Spurs before 2,861 at Maverick Stadium, moving the Mavs into first place in the Southern Division. The Mavs (18-12) have a half-game lead over Bakersfield (17-12), which didn't play Thursday. High Desert started scoring early and never stopped, using a 24-hit attack and scoring in every inning.

After Wednesday's 3-2 victory by the Mavericks, this one was more like one Mavericks fans are used to. The fans had barely settled into their seats before the Mavs took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Steve Martin walked and Matt Witkowski singled before Matt Mieske hit his 15th home run of the season. In the second, High Desert doubled its advantage. Ray Holbert led off with a single and Martin scored him with his second home run of the season for a 5-0 lead, knocking out Spurs starter Dave Fitzgerald (0-4).

Witkowski reached on a bunt single and went to third on a single by Mieske. With one out, a ground out by Mark Gieseke scored Witkowski for a 6-0 lead. A two-run home run by Hideyuki Mifune in the third cut the lead to 6-2. Back-to-back doubles by Steve Bethea and John Abercrombie leading off the third gave the Mavs a 7-2 lead. With two outs, a double by Witkowski and a single to center by Mieske gave the Mavs a 9-2 lead.

But the Spurs didn't die, eventually cutting the lead to two at 10-8, but they couldn't get any closer as their pitching struggled to slow down the Mavericks' offense. Mavericks notes The Modesto A will hold a benefit auction and raffle at 6 0S prior to their July 20 game. Proceeds will go to the Mark Stancel Fund, named for the former Modesto pitcher who is suffering from brain cancer. The Oakland A are helping out with the event and are supplying some of the memorabilia for the auction. For more game information, call (209) 529-7368.

The turnaround came at home. In the Dominican Winter League, with teammates such as Tony Pena and Luis Polonia, Garcia, an unknown, became an important member of his new team, Aguilas Cibaenas. Garcia, in the Aguilas bullpen at the start, was moved into the rotation by season's end. The numbers 4-1, with a 1.35 ERA in 64 innings earned him Rookie of the Year honors. And gave him a noticeable confidence boost.

It was not always easy in the United States, so far from his family. Having left the Dominican Republic at age 15, Garcia perhaps needed a successful winter to feel secure. "I was always a very shy guy," Garcia said. "I was scared of everything here. I had to learn the language, learn the culture.

It took me a lot of years to get used to the American way oflife. "It's very open here, very free, and really practical. Everything is automatic." Except pitching, as Garcia has learned. The paradoxical nature of the game has been illustrated to him throughout this frustrating season. While he is the Spirit's most consistent starter, he also is the streakiest.

He lost his first five decisions, won the next five and lost the next four. He snapped the latest streak Tuesday, with a victory over Modesto, another reminder that the Seattle Mariners seemed to have scouted Garcia well before deciding to turn the longtime shortstop into a pitcher. It was the first time Modesto had lost in July, after 16 consecutive triumphs. "My love of the game is hitting," Garcia said. "(But) I'm beginning to enjoy the game as pitcher.

Now that I'm doing this, I accept the fact that I am a pitcher." To improve, Garcia no doubt will have to add power and pounds. And if he gains consistency with his fastball which occasionally slips to the mid-80s his forkball will look that much better. "It's not like he's a 230-pound, 6-foot-7 pitcher," said Spirit pitching coach Chuck Kniffin. "The forkball is his best pitch, but 20 more pounds will keep him strong. "He's talked to me about it.

We're going to try to get him in a program after the season. (We're happy) that he's approached us. Most of the time, it's the other way around." But before Garcia pursues his bulk fast diet in the offseason, he will try to win his remaining seven or eight starts. He knows that those who finish strong impress the most. And to avoid another losing streak, Garcia has found a rabbit's foot, which he plans to wear before every game, whether or not he's pitching.

"This is to remind myself that I'm a very lucky guy," he said. SAN BKRXAR 1)1X0 As the strikeouts multiply, Marcos Garcia grows curious. He, too, them. Garcia tall, skinny, sneaky doesn't throw hard. The readings rarely please him.

He is no Senor Smoke. Senor Spoke, maybe. What's clear is that, at 6-4, the Spirit right-hander, despite the loss-than-imposing 190 he carries, deserves to he addressed formally. The evidence is in his trophy case. Already.

Garcia, who was a shortstop until 1988. has thrown a no-hitler, won a rookie of the year award, and was named to an all-star team. His next goal: Add a few pounds, in the double-digit always had problems gaining weight." Garcia said. "I 'thinkjfl pick up 20 hich is a lot my chances of being in the big leagues are going to rise." That possibility has increased significantly in 1991, with Garcia, an All-New England inlicldcr as a high school senior, producing 114 strikeouts in 1 17 innings. His record is a deceptive 6-9.

considering he was 0-5 through mid-May. Even then, he was throwing well. He had eight strikeouts in first start. 13 in his second and 14 on May 22, to earn his first victory. UHUfcK IU MWff KB CHANGE OF NAME (1277C.C.P.) CASE NUMBER 264412 SUPERIOR COURT OF CALIFORNIA.

Other than the no-hitter he threw for Tempe of the Arizona (Rookie) League in 1989, his desires exceeded his accomplishments.
