ASK STORE MAH4CER fOR DETAILS By James Curran Sun Sports Writer SAN BERNARDINO It took nearly the entire season for Brian Hancock to learn an adjustment. The San Bernardino Spirit probably wishes it could have sunk in one start later. Hancock, a pitcher for Stockton, settled down after the Spirit posted a 4-1 lead and limited San Bernardino to just one hit after the second inning as the Ports recorded a 6-5 California League victory in front of 2,120 fans at Fiscalini Field on Saturday night. Hancock (2-3) went eight innings, which according to Ports coach Mickey Kelleher is his longest of the season. Kelleher and Spirit manager Greg Mahlberg agree: the focus of the game changed when the left-handed Hancock busted the ball inside on a predominantly right-handed Spirit lineup. "I appreciate an effort from a pitcher like that, starting out tough and working back," Mahlberg said. "People forget that good pitching will stop good hitting any day. Moving it around, changing the speeds, deception. He had it all." San Bernardino stayed in contention with three home runs, although all were solo shots. Michael Figga cracked his 22nd homer in the sixth inning for the final Spirit hit. The Spirit is 22-28 in the second half of the Cal League season, while the Northern Division-leading Ports are 32-20. Hancock allowed seven hits while striking out seven and walking one. Scott Rose took the loss to fall to 8-9 for San Bernardino, alllowing six runs and six hits in six innings, fanning three and walking five. Manny Martinez took the first pitch from Hancock over the left-field fence to give the Spirit the lead. Tim Demerson (who scored two runs) also homered, his 10th, in the second. Stockton pulled to within 4-3 in the third when Leon Glenn socked a two-run home run. The Ports forged ahead with three more in the sixth, including Andy Fairman's 13th homer, a two-run shot. Mike Stefanski followed with a single and a stolen base. Tony Diggs singled to center and when he took a wide turn at first, Martinez tried to nail him with a throw back to first. Diggs took off for second and the relay throw from first baseman Ryan Freeburg sailed into left, allowing Stefanski to score. "When things happen against us early, we still feel we have the offense to get back in the game," said Stockton manager Lamar Johnson. Spirit notes San Bernardino is now 2-51 when it trails after seven Rancho Cucamonga routs Modesto, 12-5 The Sun RANCHO CUCAMONGA Center fielder Vince Moore went 3-for-4, scored two runs and had two RBI, leading the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes to a 12-5 victory over the Modesto A's in a California League game Saturday night. Left-hander Cam Cairncross (9-10) picked up the win, giving up five hits and three earned runs in seven innings for the Quakes. Rancho Cucamonga is 21-30 in the Southern Division. Right-fielder Enoch Simmons went 2-for-3, hit a double and had an RBI and a run for Modesto. Right-hander Don Wengert (5-2) took the loss, giving up 10 hits and eight runs in four innings.
