Four hundred and eight people were killed in these 1964 accidents. Other accidents which usually involve only one car were those of vehicles overturning in the roador crashing into 'fixed Taken togther, these two types of accidents accounted for 27 traffic deaths. Colonel Hugh H. Waggoner, Superintendent of the Missouri Highway Patrol, said: "The growng seriousness of this type of accident suggests that many drivers may be lacking in the vital skill of being able to bring a vehicle safely back on the pavement, if it wanders or is forced off onto the shoulder. "They may know that they should not panic, hit the brake and turn sharply back onto the road, but this knowledge in itself is not enough.

They must react properly. "The art of bringing a vehicle back on the roadway without skidding, or fishtailing consists of a gradual decrease of speed and a slow return to the roadway when traffic "There have been a great number of these types of accidents far this year," car Colonel Waggoner concluded. "It is imperative that motorists improve their driving ability and regulate their speed to road, weather and traffic conditions to avoid these preventable accidents." Free Teal Permits Due This Month Distribution of permits for special nine-day teal season, scheduled to open September 18, will begin about June 25. The Conservation Commission has been notified by the United State Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife that the permits will be shipped to arrive on or before that date. Permits can be obtained free by writing to the Conservation Commission either at the central offices in Jefferson City or the metropolitan offices in St. Louis and Kansas City.

The Bureau said the permits will be in the form of a double postcard, with one section for the hunter and the other for records. Hunters will be required to furnish information for the form when they apply for permits, and are asked to be particularly careful to include their county of residence and state hunting permit number. The special season, which will precede the regular duck season this year, will give hunters a chance to harvest the blue-wing teal, which migrate earlier than most other species. It will also provide the Bureau with some needed information on teal as well as on those who hunt them. The Bureau has established a cut-off permit distribution 30 days before the special season opens.

Adult Driver Courses Are Saving Lives "Six thousand Missouri motor. ists today have a better chance to cope with our traffic problem and stay alive." This statement highlighted the report of the first fifty Adult Driv. er Improvement Schools conducted by the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Colonel Hugh H. Waggoner, Superintendent of the Missouri Highway Patrol, was reporting on the Patrol's increased effort to curb the traffic accident "explosion" that has skyrocketed traffic deaths to a 13 per cent increase for the first five months of this year over last year. Last year's traffic toll set a new high in Missouri. The Adult Driver Improvement Schools, which are now being conducted throughout the State by a team of eighteen especially trained Highway Patrol Safety Officers, are designed to make better drivers of those who attend the School. "Thse Schools in the general sense aren't safety meetings.

We have gathered together every bit of information which we think will help drivers do a better job of driving and avoid being involved in accidents and made it into a hard hitting three and a half hour school," Waggoner explained. In talking about the response to the School, the Colonel said that he would like to accelerate the program to reach more drivers, but manpower problems curtailed expansion at this time. "I am confident this School can lower traffic deaths, reduce injuries and cut the economic loss from traffic accidents," he said. "We stress defensive driving, how to avoid the accident situation and how to better the chance to stay alive when in the accident situation. We have learned many driving tricks from the millions of miles our patrolmen drive each year.

We are including these in our Schools." The partol's driver improvement Schools are open to the pubtic--there is not charge, no tests or actual driving, Miss Lois Boston left Saturday for Springfield where she will attend the summer term of the Springfield State College.
