I I MONDAY. March 28, 1994 The Sun BS Meetings Clean lIATPW BRUSH with vjy uu Don Snyder of Yucaipa tells about his encounter with tbe man bebind the celebrity voice. Dining out with friends a couple or years ago at Sorrentino's in Palm Springs, noticed a "Frank Sinatra steak" on the menu. I asked the waiter if he was there, The waiter said, "He comes by sometimesbut not tonight. However, we do have a celebrity in the house." Being from Chicago I was delighted to find out it was Harry Carey, the radioTV announcer for the Chicago Cubs.

I'm a big Cubs fan, so I introduced our group to this most gracious man and took a few pictures. Harry looked great despite his recent bypass surgery and strenuous schedule. an 1 Harry Carey and Don Snyder Sun HAS YOUR PATH CROSSED A CELEBRITY'S? Coroner Scotty Hill said Albright's death would not impede the ongoing probe into the cause of the fumes and Ramirez's death.

Officials said the pressures of the highly publicized case may have influenced Albright's suicide. "How much that affected what happened is too early to tell," Chief Deputy Coroner Dan Cu-pidosaid. She is survived by three daughters and her husband, a retired San Bernardino County sheriffs deputy who now works as a private investigator. I understood the books, the inventory, stocking, all that stuff, it was now what?" says Martin. It was back to law enforcement.

He was asked to join the district attorney's office as its one-and-only general assignment investigator in 1975. Two years later, when they made it a bureau with a staff of four, District Attorney James Cramer appointed him its first chief. Just in time for the avalanche of violence. "I tell everyone what my dream is," he says. "If I ever win the lottery, I'm going to fund this into a top-notch, A No.l bureau and we'll get the job done right." Barring a Big Spin win this week, Martin is leaving law enforcement for the third time.

So, how about three times back again? "I don't know," says Martin. "My wife (Lazel) and I talked about what a shame it was to waste my experience. Who knows? If something interesting comes up in a year or so maybe some kind of consulting work "I love having the ability to beat the crook at his own game. I like sitting with my staff and talking about their cases, how to solve problems." The bad guys will be waiting. So will the pewter lawman.

After the Marines, he was just settling into a banking career in San Bernardino when a friend talked him into doing reserve duty for the sheriffs department. He liked the daily variety of police work and went to work for the department full time. He worked in San Bernardino, Vic-torville and Barstow on patrol, in investigations and narcotics detail about eight years. Then, changing gears, he and a friend opened their own private investigating firm, working mainly for defense attorneys. "It went against my grain," he says.

"I was on the other side, helping guys I knew were guilty." The lawman wouldn't approve. Within the year, the federal Organized Crime Task Force asked him to join its San Diego office and he jumped at the chance. For nearly three years, he did some of his most glamorous stuff deep undercover work in narcotics. His sweat, including the nervous kind, culminated in a $15 million bust of a prominent West Coast LSD ring. Then it was back to private business in San Bernardino.

Martin's family opened a liquor store. It was a new challenge. For a while. "We've had three witnesses killed in the last couple of years just for testifying. That was unheard of when I started." He cites the numbers 15,000 to 20,000 felony and 30,000 to 40,000 misdemeanor cases coming through the San Bernardino County D.A.'s office every year. And his office has 15 investigators to work with attorneys on those cases. Well, nine investigators now and six vacancies.

No money to pay 15. "It's frustrating we don't even work on 1 percent of the cases," he says. "Crime goes up. The defense gets more to work with. We get less.

It's crazy." Enough of that. That's the part he won't miss. But he has missed law enforcement before. Twice, in fact, he left agencies to enter business and came back. Martin was born in Ohio and spent eight years growing up in an orphanage.
