$17750 to be spent in the interim period for fuel was not spent during the period last year because fuel was avail able then and not needed until thi4 all Mr Buros said Maintenance of plant is ex pected to cost $45701 in the first half of next year compared to $35223 in this first six months Most tof the $10000 i rise Mr Buros explained is tak en up in need for new heating equipment in some schools plus 1 he expected rise in salaries of maintenance employes Cost of auxiliary agencies will rise to $66019 from $51744 in the comparative period this year This $15000 hike comes from a need for replacement of library books and periodicals the cogt of general organization and inter scholastic sports at $5450 pre viously paid in the six months and an expected $3000 deficit in operation of cafeterias due to increased salaries and higher cost of food Mr Buros explained that the Board of Education decided to underwrite General Organization and interscholastic sports up to $5000 almost $1800 more than the $3269 to be spent in 1951 The extra $450 is needed for medical and dental care of athletes ixed charges are expected to climb from $173181 spent in the first half of this year to $232029 for the interim period Biggest reasons for the $59000 jump Mr Buros said are the pension retire ment plan previously paid during the second six months of the old fiscal year and the reserve for un collected taxes for which the city took responsibility when the school system was part of the tax setup Debt service including redemp tion of bonds and interest on bonds lists $259257 needed in the first half of 1952 compared with $273975 used in the same period of this year $139700 Capital Outlay Under capital outlay the budget as proposed shows a need for $139700 in the interim period This electrical equipment new library books and furniture Superintendent posed budget figures also listed details of estimated receipts for study by citizens A cash balance on hand at the beginning of the ensuing fiscal year is expected to stand at a tentative $627000 minus an esti mated $590000 for outstanding commitments including contracts with building and supply firms leaving a tentative balance of $37000 State aid of $520223 federal al lotments tuition from districts and students plus building rentals adds a tentative $606323 bringing the total of receipts other than local property tax for the current year to an estimated $643323 Add to this an estimated $1 438341 computed for tax leviesTr? iho months and the total receipts equal the amount of the proposed $2081664 Mr Buros explained that the tax levy computation was figured from last Summer's assessment which came to $948 per thousand of assessed valuation He pointed out that while certain properties are exempt from city taxation they are subject to taxation for school purposes In further explaining some of the increased amounts needed for operation of the schools Mr Buros said that salaries were jumped under terms of the Barrington Report and he expects the Board of Education to approve a similar adjustment for non professional employes The in creases already voted and cxpect ed increases are included in the interim budget he said With regard to the cost of Jiving adjustment proposed in the Barrington report Mr Buros said he did not include any funds for this purpose in the proposed budget would have added $30
