Lincolnshire Lawn Tennis Canadian heavyweignt Ute last night with a split twelve-round decision over holder George Chuvalo It was the Statement Championships at Grimsbv third title fight between the two boxers dispute between the Lincolnshire Association representing the three Scunthorpe steelworks and those of their employees represented by the Amalgamated Engineering Union (the AEU) is now entering its third week i I i The strike has origins and causes much deeper than those which have appeared on the surface The AEU is demanding the determining voice as to which system of working the steel companies will adopt The managements reject this demand and maintain that working systems must be arranged to meet the needs of the job and not necessarily according to the i-equirements of the union Thus we have a situation where there does not appear to be any scope tor compromise between the two parties The above are the basic facts of the situation At the present time production is being maintained but jj there are vital pieces of plant which are not receiving the full maintenance attention they require during the holiday periods It is this plant which has made Scunthorpe prosperous If it fails everyone will suffer If it fails at a time when there is a serious shortage of business everyone may suffer permanently as orders once transferred away from Scunthorpe will be difficult to win back This is not the first time that management and men have failed to reach a satisfactory solution to their problems but in the steel industry both parties are normally very ready to submit their differences to some external body for examination whilst work proceeds normally The Lincolnshire Ironmasters Association has urged such a procedure in the present dispute but this had not yet been adopted by the AEU The managements have offered the union full facilities for detailed examination of existing two-shift working requirements following a return to work i This announcement is issued by the LINCOLNSHIRE ASSOCIATION SCUNTHORPE.
