Their job was to assist in fighting the Japanese. Led by Claire Lee Chennault, the elite team of fighter pilots was recruited from military bases across the country. The men were enticed with offers of adventure and hefty salaries.

Financed by the Chinese government with U.S.-backed loans, the 259 men embarked on a series of flights that slowed the Japanese advance. Over a six-month period, 296 Japanese planes were destroyed by Flying Tiger teams. Attorney Schriebman points to a 1942 memo from then-Army Air Corps chief, Gen. Henry Arnold, as proof the Flying Tigers operated with "the approval of the President and the War never acknowledged the Flying Tigers as anything but a volunteer effort functioning independently of U.S.-controlled operations. Schriebman said documents recently obtained prove the U.S.

Army and the Roosevelt White House helped orchestrate the group's travel and missions. There were 67 Flying Tigers who celebrated their veteran's status Saturday in San Diego. The group began celebrating their 50th reunion on Independence Day and will finish festivities today. The controversy over the Fly-ing Tigers goes back to the group's early formation, which remains shrouded in secrecy. Survivors include his wife, Genevieve; two sons, Ronald Cova of Rialto and Larry Allen of Fontana; one sister, Clara Mae Winegardener of Indiana; one brother, Norval Jay of Indiana; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Green Acres Mortuary, 11715 Cedar Bloomington. Chapel services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. Burial is at Green Acres Memorial Park following the services.

ROBERT B. BEAN Fontana resident Robert B. Bean, 73, of Fontana died of a stroke Thursday at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center of Fontana. Bean, a native of Richfield, Utah, lived in San Bernardino County for 36 years. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fontana.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis two sons, Byron J. of Corona and Robert Bruce of Fontana; two sisters, Leah Chandler of Aptos and Virginia Larson of Provo, Utah; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Dickey Mortuary, 8030 Mango Fontana. Graveside services are 11 a.m.

Tuesday at Rialto Park Cemetery, 200 N. Willow Ave. FLOYD D. OGLETREE Heavy equipment operator Floyd Dalton Ogletree, 68, of Fontana died Wednesday at his home. Cause of death is pending a coroner's report.

STEWART F. LANGDON Rancher Stewart F. Langdon, 92, of San Bernardino died of pneumonia Tuesday at Jerry L. Pettis Memorial Veterans Hospital in Loma Linda. Langdoii, a native of Texas, lived in San Bernardino four years.

He was a retired rancher. Survivors include two brothers, Burns of San Bernardino and Theodore of Bakersfield. Visitation is 2 to 5 p.m. today at Palms Chapel, 16918 Base Line, Fontana. Services are 11 a.m.

ARTHUR EDWIN YEAGER Machinist Arthur Edwin Yeager, 77, of Calimesa died Monday at Bras-well's Colonial Care in Redlands. Cause of death is pending a coroner's report. Yeager, a native of Ohio, lived in Calimesa 19 years.

He was a machinist for Yeager Manufacturing for 40 years. He was a member of Beaumont Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge 726 and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Yucaipa. HARRY V. RICKMAN Maintenance supervisor Harry V. Rickman, 76, of Yu-caipa died of cardiac arrest Wednesday at Redlands Community Hospital. Rickman, a native of Corpus Christi, Texas, lived in Yucaipa 12 years. He was a maintenance supervisor for the City of Commerce.

HOUGHTON Ruth L. Houghton, age 87, passed away on July 3, 1991 In San Bernardino. Ruth was born In Bluelacket, OK on August 21, 1903. She resided in San Bernardino for forty-nine years. She was a Foreman for Kaiser Steel Corp.

She is survived by a daughter, Joan Goodman of San Bernardino; five granddaughters, Teri Hoyt of Highland, Donna Clarendon, Colleen Paris Krista Painter, all of San Bernardino, Annette Gabel of San Juan Capistrano; eleven great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren. Couch, 91, a 67-year resident, died here July 5, 1991 of congestive heart failure. She was born Dec. IS, 1899 In Illinois. Mrs. Couch was preceded In death by her husband of 63 years, Carl A.

The arrest was made by the Rialto Police Department's Street Crime Attack Team about 10:15 p.m. Friday. The sergeant, whose name was not released, was driving in Rialto about 7 p.m. Tuesday in the 1000 block of West Second Street when a shot from a pellet gun broke the passenger-side window of his car. He wasn't Injured.

RIALTO Police have arrested a 15-year-' old boy in connection with a shooting attack on a patrol sergeant last week. The boy, whose name is not being released because of his age, was being held Saturday in Juvenile Hall on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and shooting into an occupied vehicle..
