ished the running portion 20 seconds late. The fitness requirements impose exercise minimums that vary by age and sex. For example, a 17-year-old male soldier must perform 42 push-ups and 52 sit-ups in two minutes each, and run two miles in 15:54 minutes. A 52-year-old man, however, has to do only 16 push-ups and 26 sit-ups in two minutes each, and run two miles in 20 minutes flat. The minimums are less demanding for women.

Weight requirements also get easier with age. The maximum allowable weight for a 5-foot-10 male soldier is 180 pounds at age 18, compared with 192 at age 40 or older. A 5-foot-5 female soldier cannot weigh more than 137 pounds at 18 or 149 pounds at 40. At a weigh-in Friday, Brennan the No. 2 official in the California Guard exceeded the maximum allowed for his 5-foot-9 12-inch frame by more than 30 pounds.

Excess pounds are allowed, however, if other measurements find total body fat content within standards 26 percent, in Bren-nan's case. Observers noted the 52-year-old general has a muscular upper body that enabled him to speed through the push-up test. The Persian Gulf war revealed a need to emphasize physical fitness for Guard personnel, who serve on duty only one weekend per month and 15 additional days a year. "In the past our focus has been on military training and academic requirements," Thrasher said. "Physical fitness was way down on the list." Fitness requirements are easier for 6,000 Air Force members of the California National Guard, who must pass only a running or walking test, a spokesman said.

"Air Force personnel, generally speaking, are more sedentary," Maj. Bruce Roy said. By ROBERT D.DAVILA McClatchy News Service SACRAMENTO Beads of sweat formed on Maj. Gen. Robert C.

Thrasher's face during a field operation Friday. Flat on his back under the harsh Sacramento sun, with his feet pinned down, the commander of the California National Guard appeared to falter. "C'mon, sir squeeze 'em out!" his soldiers urged as Thrasher struggled to sit up. With that encouragement, the general sucessfully completed the military exercise: 26 sit-ups in two minutes, as required by new physical fitness standards of the California Guard. Thrasher and other Guard officials took the fitness test of push-ups, sit-ups and a 2-mile run on the track field Friday at Jesuit High School in Carmichael.

The standards were adopted in the wake of the Persian Gulf War, when officials found that as many as 80 percent of some Army Guard units were unable to meet active-duty fitness requirements without physical training. Last month, Brig. Gen. Daniel Brennan said officials would "kick out" personnel who couldn't meet the standards. That drew complaints from some of the 21,000 Army soldiers in the Guard, who questioned the fitness levels of officers who spend most of their time at desks.

So four of the top brass traded their medal-studded uniforms Friday for T-shirts, gym shorts and running shoes. "If I don't do it, how can I expect anyone else to do it?" said Thrasher, the top official of the California Guard. The commander and two other officers successfully completed the workout. Brennan, who is recovering from an ankle injury and wore a brace, passed the push-up and sit-up tests but fin and Marjorie Recek of Fort Calhoun, and 30 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren and 23 great-greatgrandchildren.
