Letter changed coke-user's mind Friends may call at the Zion Baptist Church, 600 Cross Cambridge, today from 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at noon at the church. Verdia R. Jones QUEEN ANNE Verdia Rae Jones of Queen Anne, wife of Raymond C. Jones, died at the Memorial Hospital, Easton on Sunday, Dec. 21, 1986. She was 57.

Friends wishing information concerning funeral arrangements are requested to call the Nevvnam Funeral Home, Easton. Post 77 in Easton. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Cambridge. He was employed by Price's Tire Shop for 25 years, Swann Tire Service for 15 years and Black Decker until his health failed. On Sept.

1973, he married the former Dorothy McNamara and made his home in Cambridge for 13 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Sandra Roberts Pinder of Hurlock; two step sons, James Tilghman of Ridgely and Daryl McNamara of Baltimore; four grandchildren; two brothers, Walter Thomas of Easton and the Rev. James T. Roberts of Williamsburg; two sisters, Mary Roberts and Helen Roberts of Easton. Seven brothers and three sisters died previously.

My daughter-in-law doesn't give her mother anything and hasn't for years. I suspect my son is taking his cue from her. Both are yuppies and spend lots of money on themselves for fancy golf clubs, skis, tennis rackets, cameras, etc. Since gifts are symbols of love, are they giving me some kind of message or are they simply cheap and spoiled? How am I to know tend what would be the best way )o deal with them? Your advice would be greatly appreciated. GRATEFUL GRANDMA IN BURLINGTON, VT.

DEAR GRANDMA: Where did you get the idea that gifts are a symbol of love? Sometimes they are substitutes for love. It's how you treat people that counts. Why don't you stop buying presents for those spoiled brats and put an end to all the commercial nonsense? the Times and leai'ned the authors of the letter from which you quoted are Louis L. Cregler, M.D., and Herbert Marx, M.D., Assistant Chief of Medicine and Chief of Medicine at the Bronx Veterans Administration Medical Center. Thanks for caring enough to write.

Dear Ann Landers: Your letter about a spoiled daughter prompted me to tell you about my spoiled son (married to a spoiled daughter). Since these two have married, my son has stopped giving me a birthday gift, stopped acknowledging Mother's Day, and no longer says thank you for the many favors I do for them. Their child, my granddaughter, is now 2 years old. I love her and want to stay on good terms with my son and daughter-in-law partly because of the child. The only real "fly in the ointment" is the question of gifts.

He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He was a member of Blake Blackston American Legion Former wife of author Kurt Vonnegut dead at 64 Dear Ann Landers: We have been hearing an awful lot about cocaine In recent months and, as a sometime user, I thought It was mostly media hype. But a letter I read In The New York Times recently changed my mind.

I no longer think of coke as a recreational drug. I now know It's a killer. Here are some facts that brought me to my senses: In spite of all the adverse publicity, the number of coke users is increasing. Because coke is becoming less expensive, more younger users are becoming addicted. As the number of users increases, so does the number of emergency room visits and incidents of sudden death.

Cocaine affects the body's supply of adrenaline, causes the heartbeat to accelerate and increases the blood pressure significantly. Individuals with weak blood vessels run a serious risk of having strokes. Most cocaine fatalities are caused by cocaine intoxication, which produces respiration failure or heart attacks. Death can occur anywhere from minutes tq, hours after taking the drug. Much of this information is so new it has not yet found its way into the medical literature.

I used to snort a line or two at parties and then I began to use coke to keep me high and energetic when I had to face a new client or a social situation that demanded that I be "up." I now realize how lucky I was. I could have ended up in the morgue like so many others. Thanks for reading this awfully long letter, Ann, and I pray that I will see it in print. LUCKED OUT IN MANHATTAN DEAR MAN: Here's your letter every word of it. The man, identified as Benjamin F. Campbell, was the only person home when the fire broke out at 10:45 a.m. in a first-floor living room in this southern Washington County community, said Bob Thomas, a spokesman for the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.

Investigators blamed an electric extension cord that shorted out beneath a chair, Thomas said. The house had no smoke detectors. Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene by the Washington County medical examiner, Thomas said. Thomas said 75 firefighters from four fire departments worked 45 minutes to bring the blaze under control. Damage was estimated at $25,000.
