FRANCIS: 15th Annual Stearman Bi-Plane and Balloon Fly-In, St. Francis Airport. Fogerty, lang are back with style John Fogerty's like an old friend you see only at high-school reunions. With the space so long between meetings, you spend a lot of time reliving memories before you break any new ground. With Creedence Clearwater Revival, Fogerty racked up a couple dozen hits, churning out a body of work that 25 years later still stands tall among the best rock 'n' roll.

"Blue Moon Swamp" marks Fogerty's first album in more than 10 years, and his return is stunning. From the opening of "Southern Streamline" (a musical cousin of "Bad Moon Fogerty wipes all those years away with a good-time country rocker. Buoyed by the harmony vocals of the Lonesome River Band, Fogerty transports you to a back porch somewhere in the Deep South. With "Hot Rod Heart," he spins off a song designed to keep you company out on the open road. "Bring It Down To Jelly Roll" has instant party classic stamped on it.

MICHAEL COTE Scripps Howard News Service k.d. lang What do transvestism and ciga- MUSfe Review rette smoking have in common? Leave it to k.d. lang to find a connection that's both witty and emotionally resonant. While the title of the Canadian singer's wonderful new album, "Drag," is an obvious joke that plays off her public image as a semibutch lesbian, it also alludes to the lyrics of the record's 12 songs, all of which evoke addictive pleasures, especially smoking. On the surface, it might appear that lang, who is a nonsmoker, has made an album that glamorizes cigarettes with titles such as "Love Is Like a Cigarette," "Smoke Rings" and "Smoke Dreams." But collectively the songs portray tobacco as an unhealthy, addictive crutch and the smoking of cigarettes as an affectation that is also as dangerous as a romantic obsession.

Filled with seriously beautiful singing, "Drag" sharpens lang's image as pop music's smartest post-modern torch singer. In her case, post-modern means a whimsical eclecticism in choosing material from different genres and eras some of which has obvious camp appeal From 'Valley of the Dolls' and the 1930s Glen Gray and Casa Loma Orchestra theme song, "Smoke and a delight in playing games of emotional dress-up.
