A-13 PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE TUESDAY, JUNE 24, 1997 OBITUARIES STANLEY A. BRILLER CAROLYN and JOHN L. SCHMIDT Sr. Lived, worked, golfed together Heart specialist, scholarly researcher By Gary Rotstein Post-Gazette Staff Writer Carolyn and John L. Schmidt Sr.

lived, worked and played together for more than a half-century. Over the weekend, they died one day apart of unrelated illnesses at St Barnabas Nursing Home in Richland. The former Hampton couple, who struck up their romance wnen admiring one another's moves on the dance floor, spent the 1950s and '60s running the Northern Seed and Tractor Co. on Route 8. Quiet Mrs.

Schmidt, nicknamed "Smiles" since she was a girl, kept the books and managed the office of the lawn and garden and rental equipment business in Hampton. Her boisterous husband ripalt with Mr. Schmidt, known as "Jackie" since younger days when he was a star scholastic athlete and professional baseball player, moved into a separate room at St Barnabas in May. He died at about 5 a.m. Saturday at age 75.

Mrs. Schmidt 74, married to him for 53 years, passed away about 7 a.m. Sunday without being told of her husband's death. "We wouldn't tell her, but I think deep down she knew," said their daughter, Jill Maurey of McCand-less. "She knew he would have a hard time if she went first so she waited." They met in high school, when Mr.

Schmidt was a running back for Etna High School. From 1940 to 1942, he attended Staunton Military Academy in Virginia, where he was a champion welterweight boxer and excelled in baseball and football. The American League's Philadelphia Athletics signed the admitted good-field, no-hit shortstop to a contract and he played in stints with them during World War II. His career statistics don't even make the Baseball Encyclopedia, but he was noteworthy enough for former Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda to know of his career and send him an autographed baseball during Mr. Schmidt's illness.

customers and made the key busi ness decisions. They golfed together at country clubs both here and in retirement in He belonged to the Query Club in Sewickley, a club where scholarly sorts pick a topic each year and: everyone writes a paper on it. Dr. Briller was an artistic man who pursued many interests playing classical piano, painting, woodworking, making jewelry and using a hand printing press. A Brooklyn native, Dr.

Briller graduated from Yale University and the New York University School of Medicine. He served as an Air Force captain from 1951 to 1953, and then returned to the New York University School of Medicine as a teacher and researcher. In 1957, Dr. Briller became an associate professor of medicine and associate professor of engineering at the University of After his colleague Claude Joyner became the chairman of' medicine at Allegheny General Hospital, he recruited Dr. Briller.to run AGH's heart station, running exercise stress tests and reading EKGs.

He wrote many research papers in his field and co-authored a book on how heart muscle cells work. He served on a number of advisory committees for the National Institutes of Health, and chaired one that was seeking to build an artificial heart In addition to his wife and daughter, Nancy, he is survived by another daughter, Katharine Briller of Seattle; his sister Shirley Gorrin of Scottsdale, and three grandchildren. Friends will be received tomorrow from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Dallas Irvine Funeral Home, 702 Beaver St, Sewickley. Services will be private.

Memorial contributions' may be made to the American Heart 10 Duff Road, Penh Hills 15235, or to the Friends of Sewickley Public Library, 500 Thorn Sewickley 15143. By Sharon Voas Post-Gazette Staff Writer Dr. Stanley A Briller was a brilliant cardiologist biomedical electrical engineer and gadgeteer. He bridged the gap between doctors, who needed instruments, and electrical engineers, who knew how to design them. Combining medicine, engineering and physics, he conducted research on pacemakers and on computerizing the electrocardiograms that record the electrical activity of the heart Dr.

Briller worked on an artificial heart that developed into the left ventricular assist that tides people over until they get heart transplants and may eventually become a permanent supplement for weak hearts. The scholarly researcher was also an inveterate tinkerer with a grand sense of humor who built his own computers, designed a headdress with blinking fireflies for his wife and built a music box with a hand that turned itself off. Dr. Briller, 74, died of lung cancer at his Edgeworth home Saturday. He officially retired in 1991 as a professor of medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and professor of engineering in medicine at Carnegie Mellon University, but he continued teaching at CMU until last month.

And since 1993 he had chaired the medical advisory board of Meta-morphic Surgical Devices Inc. of Pittsburgh, a company that develops laproscopic surgical devices. Those allow doctors to perform surgery through small holes that do less damage and heal more quickly. Dr. Briller was a bespeckled man with close-cropped white hair and bushy eyebrows.

His mind and curiosity were always ticking. "He was the smartest man I've ever met" said His daughter, Dr. Nancy Briller Grey of Bremerton, Wash. Carolyn and John Schmidt Sr. During their retirement in Florida, the Schmidts became golf partners and card-playing friends with entertainer Jackie Gleason and his wife.

They enjoyed their leisure years as a follow-up to business careers in which they worked six days a week from early morning until late evening, from spring to fall. They took over the Northern Seed and Tractor Co. from his parents, and they turned it over to their own children in 1970. The business has been replaced by a service station at Route 8's Florida, with both of them able to shoot in the 80s and celebrate an occasional hole-in-one. When Mr.
