season Having failed to connect on three straight passes the Cavaliers gave freshman Jeff Walker the unenviable task of attempting his first college punt from the goal line Walker got the kick away but his low liner was returned 42 yards by West Steve Newberry al lowing the Mountaineer offense to drive just 10 yards for the first touch down of a 32 18 near rout 1 By halftime it was 21 3 and the Cavaliers needed a touchdown and two point conversion with two seconds left in the game to gain some measure of respectability would hope this would be the worst game we play all said Vir ginia coach Dick Bestwick say this was expected would be quite to the The reasons for the loss were apparent: They could not stop the combination of Oliver Luck to Darrell Miller and the UVa passing attack was largely ineffective In one of the worst statistical per formances of his career starting Vir ginia quarterback Todd Kirtley completed just 8 of 26 passes Reserve Gordie Whitehead was 7 for 10 on last touchdown drive but by then West Virginia was substituting freely One bright spot was the play of pre season All ACC tight end Kevin Riccio who caught two touchdown passes making a sensational lunging grab for first TD The two touch down passes were only one less than UVa threw all of the 1980 season but that was little consolation Asked to evaluate his play Kirtley said very good I hide the facts
