News comes from Peuver announcing tbe death of John C. Iiyan, one of the pioneers of Speartinh valley and for seventeen years a prominent merchant and business man in this city.

For ten years past Mr. Kyan has made Ienvcr his home. John C. Ryan was born in Amherst county, Nov. 4, His early life was spent mostly in the south.

He was a blacksmith by trade, and followed that occupation several years at St. Joseph, Mo. In while en route to Kates-ville, where he had purchased a farm, he was conscripted into the confederate army, but protested bo strongly that he was finally released and returned to Kentucky. About 1M he started overland for Montana, locating at Virginia City, where he opened a blacksmith shop. In the fall of that year be returned to Missouri and bought a stock of goods and shipped them by boat to Montana.

The tmat was unk en route and the entire cargo li st. but Mr. Kyan had taken the precaution to have his goods insured, therefore lost nothing. Another stock was purchased and taken to Diamond City, where he established a general store. In 177 he came to the IJIack Hills, locating in Speartlsh, where his tirst business establishment was a freight wagon, situated in the old stockade near where the Spearlish hotel now stands.

Later he built a business hou.se on the corner now occupied by the Matthews block, and was there for about seven rlnrii im mi wfrr'l for thr ur' of nm UH.
