1. BEST BAND: Carrick. 1 4 Perry has stars everywhere on offense quarterback Rod Rutherford, running back Chuck Griffy and slotback Robb Butler. But when the subject is the sacqess of his team this season, Perry Coach Gus Catanese lays it on the line. "Our skill position players are very good, but except for Chuck Linhart, our entire offensive line is gone," Catanese said.

So Catanese went into preseason wondering, "What's my line?" Rutherford, Griffy and Butler are game-breakers, but they need someone to block. How well the new -tine performs this season could be the difference between good and great for Perry. "I think we'll be OK on the defensive Jine," Catanese said. "But the offensive line is a question mark." Catanese will build the line abound Linhart "who looks like he's going to be a real force." Rutherford passed for 1,356 yards last sea-son while Griffy rushed for 1,766. On defense, Butler and Rutherford are excellent in the secondary while Nate Brown is a talented linebacker.

The two other returning starters are senior defensive end Anthony Evans (5-9, 210) and senior defensive back Anthony Luster (5-9. 175). Perry's goal is to win a second straight championship and also the PIAA Class AAA title. The Commodores came up one game short last year, losing to Berwick in the PIAA final. "I think we can be better than last year," Griffy said.

Elsewhere in the City League, Schenley and Brashear are expected to be strong. Schenley has an excellent backfield with junior Tayon Mitchell (5-9, 180), senior Darryl Robinson (6-1, 210) and senior Andre Patterson (6-0, 170). Mitchell rushed for 924 yards on 108 carries last season. Five other starters are back from last season. "With the experience returning from last year, our expectations and goals are very high," said Schenley Coach Jim Trent.

Brashear also has two talented offensive players in senior quarterback Rasheed Marshall (6-0, 165) and senior running back Henry Lane (5-9, 175). Lane rushed for 1,138 yards last season and Marshall completed 64 of 132 passes for 1,052 yards. Seven other returning starters make the Bulls a challenger in the City. Among the returners are senior tight end-defensive end Treves Strothers (6-2, 220), senior fullback-linebacker Kevin Jordan (6-0, 198) and senior tight end-defensive back Darren Ross (5-10, 165). Oliver should be a playoff contender.

Like a number of teams in the City this season, the Bears also should have an excellent backfield with senior quarterback Darryl Haymon (6-3, 185), senior halfback Ha it Peter DianaPost-Gazette Robb Butler gives the Perry Commodores strength at slotback and in the densive backfield. John Arnett (6-1, 205) and senior fullback Dante Mathews (6-2. 235). At Westinghouse, George Webb enters his 21st season as coach, and welcomes nine returning starters. Senior Darryl Ramseur (5-8, 170) is a talented running back-defensive back.

Senior fullback-linebacker Corey Alston (5-7, 175) and junior center-offensive guard Keith Glover (6-0, 245) are two other top Bulldogs. Allderdice, which tied Schenley for fourth place last year, has 11 returning starters, including senior quarterback Bill Tenney, who completed 33 of 80 for 680 yards last season. Peabody returns five starters and all are juniors. ing rusher, transferred to Perry. -Carrick has only seven seniors on its 40-player roster.

One of them is running back Darnell Avent (5-" 10, 185). Langley has been hit hard by academic problems. Of 75 players who signed up in the spring, 38 have been declared academically ineligible. "We're a very young team," said Coach Bob Flaus. There is some optimism at perennial doormat South.

The Orioles have 11 returning starters and two of the best are junior running back-linebacker Duane Hardy (6-0, 185) and senior receiver-defensive back Kevin Woods (6-3, 200).
