by costly delays ill winds the threat of hurricanes and a sandbar Tm glad to be said Robert Woollard one of three crew men who made the entire voyage from England to Virginia A crowd of more than 200 peo ple cheered and clapped when the 68 foot wooden square rigger was towed to the dock at Jamestown rom Page Bl This year the value for each of the classifications has been in creased and the new tax as sessor John Willey is using an average value to apply across the board to all farmland The average will be used until the county com pletes its soil maps which could take up to four years Willey said Monday that farm land in Roanoke County is being as sessed more fairly now than in recent years A problem in the past was that assessors were guessing at the type of soil on a farm he said Willey said the 550 figure being used is an average value set by the state based on crop yields market prices transportation and seed costs labor costs and tax rates in the county But Gobble told the arm Bu reau Tuesday night that the 3550 per acre figure is based on a guess about the land value made years ago That guess took into ac count the soil in Roanoke City and Salem which is better than much of the county soil he said and weather in the future he said but it will get into that slowly "There is a lot of news here already so we tie ourselves down with that before getting sorted" The Bedford County Board of Supervisors Tuesday granted the company permission to build its transmission tower on Thaxton Mountain west of the dty of Bed ford The 1000 foot tower will be just one half mile away from the transmission tower for WSETT Chan nel 13 also based in Lynchburg Cecil Taylor a Carney spokesman said the towers will not interfere with each other because one will be UH and the other is VH The ederal Aviation Adminis tration has said the tower will create no problems for air traffic The station also has received ap proval from the ederal Communi cations Commission Carney operates independent stations in Pensacola la and Mo bile Ala ELiton said it will be three or four weeks before the tower is com plete and he hopes to begin pro gramming in December want to give the area a Christmas he Mid estival Park completing its re en actment of the 1607 voyage that brought the first permanent English settlers to the New World The boat ran aground on a sandbar in the James River a few hundred yards from the dock but was pulled off by a private power boat about 15 minutes later The crew broke out beer and champagne and praised the seawor thiness of the Godspeed "The boat handled well You ask for a better said Neil Tanner the radio operator and a second original crewmen averages are so far off that we should not accept them in Roanoke Gobble said The land should be assessed on a farm to farm basis to be fair he said But Willey said today that to the best of his knowledge no guess work went into computing the aver age farmland value for Roanoke County The State Land Evaluation Advisory Committee publishes a recommended average for each county in the state based on infor mation on farm income he id Willey said the only challenge that has ever been made to the state figures was the one he made in Roa noke County Willey said he has done every thing humanly possible to find a way to reduce the average He said he is trying to operate the land use pro gram within the legal limits set by the state and to meet his responsi bilities to other property owners in the county He said if he could find a good legal and rational way to re duce the value placed on farmland he would do it program at this point of time is operating on a factual basis Blood count Components shipped to area hos pitals 300 units drawn 391 Type needed: posiUve Hollins candidates will revving too fast so the pilot shut the engine off and asked for a landing clearance Rob ertson said The helicopter is designed so it can operate on one engine and it landed safely about 10 minutes after the first call Robertson said We cannot dispute this average" Willey said About 1200 parcels or 35 per cent of those in the county are as sessed under the land use program rather than by true market value Of those 1200 approximately 800 par cels are farmland igures on the exact acreage involved were not im mediately available Rockingham and Roanoke counties have the highest valued farmland in the state and Roanoke farmland is assessed at double the value of adjacent coun ties Gobble said Gobble said he would have to take some of the responsibility for more farmers not complaining about the new assessment "I was convinced by the tax assessor there was going to be a he said While it have time to con sider the complaints the Tax Equal iziation Board did send tax assessor Willey a letter recommending a re duction in the average value being placed on farmland to 420 an acre The recommendation was rejected by Willey after he talked with state officials according to Commission er of Revenue Wayne Compton ajgett Godspeed ends six month trip Complaints Police seek suspect in shooting spree that wounded two Roanoke police are looking for a min who they said waited forhis ex girlfriend to return to her home and then shot and wounded two men outside the residence early this morning Lonnie Murphy 25 of the 1400 block of Chapman Avenue was shot in the head and Stoney Roop 20 of Route 7 Salem was hit in the rear of his left leg about 210 in the 1500 block of Chapman Avenue Southwest police said Both men were treated at Roa noke Memorial Hospital and re leased head wound was superficial a hospital spokeswoman said No information was released about wounds Roanoke police have warrants for the assailant who was described as being in his mid 30s but they would not release his name The warrants charged him with two counts of malicious wounding a count of shooting into an occupied vehicle a count of shooting into an occupied dwelling and four counts of use of a firearm in a felony The former girlfriend Crystal Lynn Davis 28 of the 1500 block of Chapman Avenue Belinda Roop and Murphy pulled their car into back yard about 2:10 am and noticed the suspect stand ing in the yard The man fired one shot from a shotgun and hit the left headlight of the car police said As Murphy left the car the sus pect fired another shot hitting him in the head police said Murphy kept running After the first two shots Stoney Roop who was in the house came out to see what was happening The man with the shotgun fired a third shot hitting Roop in the back of his left leg police said Meanwhile Davis and Belinda Roop left the car ran into the house and slammed the door The suspect fired another shot shattering the glass in the door and then left the scene police said If Willey could have legally re duced the value of the land it would have meant a drop in the assessed value of the farmland from582 million to 14424 million The actual drop in tax revenue to the county would have been approxi mately 3160000 The equalization board had the power to either increase or decrease the assessed value of farmland but had to do it farm by farm Compton said Walter and Virginia Henry said their 23 acres at Poages Mill even get the agricultural rate and was assessed at 322000 this year would have been satisfied with be tween 3400 and 3500 per Vir ginia Henry said However Willey said the Hen rys are getting tax relief through the land use program If their prop: erty were assessed at the its fair market value they would be paying taxes on 376000 he said The arm Bureau passed a
