f'l rtfoO viiiir ww aj tn DERBY EVENING TELEGRAPH Saturday October 29 1 994 9 SOAPS FILMS COMEDY DRAMA KIDS SPORT DO EASTENDERS star Mike Reid wants to make a sensational return to Albert Square as a millionaire could have been spending his time away building up a nice little business for says Mike who left EastEnders earlier this year can return to Albert Square with a briefcase full of money and for once have something to smile Until the little matter of the arson attack on his own car lot comes to light that is Racism is always there even on the set of Casualty I know that if I make a big fuss I will be dismissed as having attitude The plot called for Ash to fight back against racism literally But for Casualty's Patrick Robinson tonight's episode involved conflict behind the cameras as well as in front of them He tells JIM THORPE why STAND by for In At The Deep End Mk 2 this time with those Birds of a Feather Linda Robson and Pauline Quirke Just as boys used to try their hand at various professions Linda and Pauline will set about becoming national newspaper journalists match-anglers and opera singers Crisis at Holby General: Charge Nurse Martin Ashford played by actor Patrick Robinson ATRICK Robinson admits he fell out with the Casualty scriptwriters before filming episode of the hit hospital drama Patrick who plays Charge Nurse Martin Ashford is seen knocking out a knife-wielding racist when the two go eyeball-to-eyeball outside the gates of Holby General I thought that was totally out of character for says Patrick just what he would have done in that situation In fact it the kind of thing I would recommend anybody doing in that kind of situation fight violence with violence it gets you nowhere situation caused me a fair amount of anxiety and I had some lengthy discussions with the scriptwriters about it the end I could see a little more logic to it I could see that my character was under huge amounts of pressure I could see that he was angry at the way in which Eddie Gordon another black member of staff had been manhandled and I could understand his fury there is only so much you can take in terms of racist Patrick a likeable 29-year-old from south London whose cousin is Arsenal striker Ian Wright says he has spent a lifetime coping with racism had to put up with the kind of horrible things that you sometimes hear about like having disgusting bits of human waste posted through letter box racism is always there even on the set of Casualty I know that if I make a big fuss about something in the script I will be dismissed as having whereas if a white actor does the same thing he will be listened to seriously and his views will be given consideration want to sound bitter because the people on Casualty have been very good to me But racism in one form or another is everywhere I attended a publicity function in the summer for Casualty I entered the building where it was being held with three of the other actors from the series and they all passed by the reception desk without any trouble when the man on the desk saw me he said: I help because he sure I had a right to be there kind of thing happens all the time But you afford to get angry about it You have to learn self-control and cool-headedness really why I found the incident with Ash in Casualty a bit hard to Patrick is now one of the most established members of the Casualty cast but says it may not be too long before he moves on talk of the show becoming twice-weekly with two half-hour episodes instead of one fifty-minute programme the moment you can develop several storylines and see them through in a proper conclusive way not sure that would be the case with half-hour programmes and I would have reservations about my future in the show if that is what happened to the But at least Patrick is central to events for the rest of this series of Casualty Ash faces the possibility of dismissal after his attack on the racist who only a few minutes earlier had been a patient calling for help from Ash and his colleagues in Holby General several other people this guy had been carted off for treatment after things turned ugly at a political rally is a certain irony to the storyline that I hope will not be lost on NOT all celebrities who sell their stories to national papers are motivated by personal greed Julie Walters auctioned an exclusive interview detailing her heartache when her daughter Maisie was diagnosed at the age of two as having leukaemia She accepted £20000 from one paper and handed it straight to Royal Marsden Hospital which
