Sports Roanoke Ti mes World News Tuesday Evening May 3 1977 Bell irst Draft Pick NEW YORK (AP) The Tampa Bay Buccaneers as expected chose Ricky Bell Southern 218 pound running back as the No 1 selection in the Na tional ootball draft of college talent Tuesday The Seattle Seahawks picking second traded their se lection to Dallas as rumored and the Cowboys took Heis man Trophy winner Tony Dorsett the most prolific ground gainer in history who led the University of Pitts burgh to the national championship In return for giving up its first round pick Seattle re ceived first round No 14 over and three second round selections giving the Seahawks five picks in the first 54 Bell walked into the packed ballroom at the Hotel Roo sevelt seconds after his name was announced and strode to the microphone displaying a Tampa Bay jersey with a white No 42 his uniform number in college waited a year and a half for this Bell said "I've got the ability to play in the NL There's no ques tion in my mind This is the biggest challenge of my life and the biggest challenge of the team's life to establish a winning trend can't do any worse than we did last year unless they expand the schedule to 16 games Then we could go 0 Bell referred to Tampa Bay's 0 14 record last year in its initial season of NL play the worst mark in the league's history The Cincinnati Bengals using a pick acquired from Buffalo in the Sherman White deal went for Eddie Ed wards an All American defensive tackle from the Universi ty of Miami In rapid fire succession the New York Jets who had hoped to get Dorsett chose Marvin Powell an offensive tackle from Southern California and the New York Giants selected Southern Cal teammate defensive tackle Gary Jeter That gave Southern Cal three selections in the first five overall picks but it was well known that the Trojans had more than a dozen seniors who were highly rated by the pro scouts The Atlanta alcons picking sixth grabbed Warren Bryant a long and lean offensive tackle from the Universi ty of Kentucky The 6 foot 6 249 pound Bryant was a start er since the fourth game of his freshman year The New Orleans Saints selected Joe Campbell a de fensive end from Maryland's Atlantic Coast Conference champions The eighth over all choice was owned by Cincinnati in the Bill Bergey deal and the Bengals used take Wilson Whitley a 268 pound defensive tackle from the University of Houston and winner of the Lombardi Trophy as the na No 1 down lineman' The Green Pay Packers selected Mike Butler a 265 pound defensive tackle from the University of Kansas The Packers however projected him as a defensive end Bell was the nation's leading rusher in 1975 with a near record 1875 yards and fourth last season with 1417 Mums' The Word Tech ails in ACC Bid RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK NC Just like a big eater at the dessert bar the Atlantic Coast Conference decided Mon day that a pie cut into seven pieces instead of eight provides tor larger slices In this case the pie is the ACC basket ball tournament and the eighth piece which was desired by Virginia Tech will not be forthcoming In a session that might have set a record for brevity the executive committee voted down any expansion specifically turn ing down a Tech application which had been sponsored by Virginia Clemson and Duke Although no formal vote was an nounced and the committee members re mained totally closemouthed it was not so much a turndown of Tech as it was a vote to maintain the status quo In this case the big issue is money Most of the money is generated from the basketball tournament including hundreds of thousands of dollars that pour into the various school coffers merely for the right to buy purchase tickets to the March cage ex travaganza One ACC source who did not attend the meeting at the Governor's Inn half way be tween Raleigh and Durham said he had nothing against Virginia Tech I cer tainly want to be the one who cut ott a couple ot hundred of our contributors from tournament Bill Brill Since that appeared to be the overriding issue the secret vote seemingly boiled down to one factor: Did Tech have enough to offer to compensate for the revenue loss to the individual schools? Even though The Roanoke Times World News learned last week that the Hok ies had made a very attractive offer in a pro posal to the ACC it apparently did not convince the faculty chairmen most of whom voted on orders from their school administration If Tech had been accepted the Gobblers would have matched a one seventh share of the current ACC assets and agreed to take less than a full share of tournament tickets for four years It was reliably learned that financial offer was in the vicinty of a halt million dollars The non voting ACC source said in his opinion that it boiled down to a simple eval uation "Is the league happy with seven teams happy with the way things are Since the ACC had two football bowl teams tor the fourth consecutive year and a basketball team (North Carolina) that fin ished second in the nation the answer ob viously was yes Dick Herbert a long time sports editor of a Raleigh newspaper who is now execu tive secretary of the ootball Coaches Assn said on a Monday night radio talk show that he considered any expansion of the ACC ever as 1 South Carolina the only charter mem ber ot the 25 year old conference to drop out talked about reapplying earlier this year but reportedly was discouraged from doing so The only other potential ACC member appears to be Georgia Tech a school with a national name in football and based in At lanta a metropolitan center The turndown for Tech although not oificially the death knell to the fu ture chances appeared to be final Twice Tech has come to the party but has yet to be asked to dance say we were said Tech athletic director rank Moseley "but I would say we're disappointed To get in the ACC would have helped us and I think we would have helped There can be no question about the first statement Unfortunately for Tech the exec utive committee apparently disagreed with the latter Timely Switches Win or Pirates By BOB TEITLEBAUM Sport Writer The old Abbott and Costello routine ot who's on first and what's on second was never very funny in real life Many times players are asked by major league teams to switch positions They sometimes do it reluctantly Others take to a position change like a duck to water It seems the latter is the case with Sa lem's John Dean and Dick Waiterhouse Dean was asked to change from third base to catcher in spring training He made the change Waiterhouse is the newest change tor Salem going from second to outfield for thefirst time Monday night If the latest Salem game is any indica 1 tion the switches are for the best Dean bashed out four hits and Waiterhouse had two as the Pirates pounded Winston Salem 8 4 These two were by no means the whole story Wink Cole homered again this time with a man on first to wipe out a 4 3 Red Sox lead in the seventh Reliever Dave Nelson came on to stop the Red Sox bats and preserve a victory tor young Rafael Vasquez But it was Dean and Waiterhouse who drew the attention Monday night Dean had been saddled in a deep slump and it was of always told me my bat would carry said the Michigan native Dean concerned that his aver age was in the 220s His explosion put him back in the 260s and sounded a warning to Carolina League pitchers know whether it was the old John Dean (he hit in the 270s last year) It's about time the hits started to fall he said "I wasn't concerned about my batting average It's too early I want to concen trate on catching If it was late in the sum mer and I started hitting like I was then I Demeter just smiled about the two Asked if he was worried about Dean not hitting a homer yet the Salem manager replied: hit the ball hard and the homers will As for Waiterhouse Demeter had a good example "We (Pittsburgh) want our players to get to the big leagues how an organ ization gets its investment said De meter remember (Ed) Ott didn't want to go to catcher We (Demeter and Pittsburgh farm director at that time Pete Peterson) spent several hours convincing Ed and his wile that he he admitted he was struggling at second So when Deme ter asked him to try left field Waiterhouse didn't object He made all the plays includ ing a tine throw to nip a Red Sox runner at second and also contributed two singles (Pittsburgh) told me they still considered me a major league prospect as far as my hitting is said Wai terhouse they think I could make the majors as an Infielder been strug gling Tonight (in left) I was a lot looser It was like a new Waiterhouse feels his hitting should improve though no one in Pittsburgh ever doubted that his early offensive troubles would be only
