The Lakeberg infants, who are joined at the chest, share one heart and liver. Doctors have said they would determine during surgery which infant will get the heart, depending on which is healthiest and has the best chance of survival. "I just tell God to do what he thinks is right for the babies," Mrs. Lakeberg said during the television interview. The waiting is difficult.

"Every time you go up there (to the hospital), you get closer to them. But you know one of them is going to die," Lakeberg said. "You just want to wave the magic wand over them and make them all better." So far, the Lakebergs' medical bills total $700,000 and could go over $1 million. Several funds have been started to help collect donations to defray the costs. Lakeberg, who works as a welder, said he wanted to get in touch with the Lewises to offer his support.

His message to the couple would be "God be with them, and to remain strong for the other baby." The Lewises and the Lakebergs share sorrow few others can know. Only about five sets of conjoined twins are born alive in the United States each year. LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) Two sets of Siamese twins, two sets of parents, two different ways of coping. Kenneth and Reitha Lakeberg of Wheatfield, understand the anguish Kenneth and Angela Lewis of Corbin, went through this week, knowing that one of their conjoined daughters was going to die when they were surgically separated.

The Lakebergs also have conjoined twins, who are awaiting the decision of a team of Loyola University Medical Center doctors in suburban Chicago on whether and when their month-old infant girls will be separated. On Thursday, less than two days after doctors separated Tiffany and Brittany Lewis, Tiffany died quietly in her parents' arms at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Her sister had received the kidney the two had shared while they were joined at the pelvis and buttocks. The Lewises and the Lakebergs have dealt with their dilemmas differently. While the Lewises have shunned publicity, the Lakebergs have talked openly with the media and Thursday night were interviewed on ABC's "Prime-Time Live." He hopes the book, "Dan Walker: The Glory and The Tragedy," will remind people of the political legacy he left behind. He says he's been falsely labeled confrontational by the media, and fears too many people still associate his crimes with his career as governor. Walker points to his accomplishments in funding education, and to cuts in state government.

His administration achieved many important goals, he said, including the state's first law on campaign fund disclosure. The former governor shakes his head over his conviction on charges he used the Oak Brook savings and loan he owned with his wife as a personal treasury. Prosecutors said Walker obtained $280,000 in loans to pay expenses for other business and personal debts. "I got into the social life going to balls." he said. "I spent too much money, got in over my head and I fell flat on my face." Baby stolen from hospital CHICAGO (AP) A 4-day-old baby was kidnapped Friday from Cook County Hospital after her mother left the child alone with a stranger, police said.

Police started a statewide search for the baby girl and her abductor believed to be a middle-aged woman. The FBI also is investigating. The baby's mother was chatting with the woman before she left her room for a few minutes, said hospital spokeswoman Wynona Redmond. When she returned around 12:30 p.m., both the woman and the baby were gone, Redmond said. Police were working up a sketch of the suspect.

The names of the baby and mother have not been released. "1 MO FLEAS 1 Year Guarantee I I CAT FANCY MAGAZINE Sauc- flnp nf thp 1f1 New Products of the Year CADIICTCBC IrbEHBwg i of Central III. Memorials: First Baptist Church or Visiting Nurse Association. CHICAGO (AP) He served four years as governor and 17 months in a federal penitentiary. At 70, Dan Walker is on another campaign: the redemption of a career tarnished by financial indiscretions he says came only after he left "My crime had nothing to do with the governorship," Walker said Friday. "I desperately want that known." Walker marched some 1,200 miles across Illinois in 1971 in an improbably successful effort to beat the Chicago Democratic machine in the primary and then capture the governorship. But it is what came after that that many Illinoisans remember: Walker's felony convictions for bank fraud and perjury; and later, the sight of their former head of state becoming a ward of the state at the Federal Prison Camp in Duluth, Minn.

Walker knows it's an image that sticks with people. It was a factor in his decision to move to San Diego when released from prison in 1989 rather than return to Illinois. "I can see it in people's eyes," the silver-haired Walker said.
