Cheers for a While in Chapel Hill an Reacts to John Gargano's TD on Keeper Play for Indians Kjnr Kr A UNC Gambles To Nip CHAPEL HILL NC North Carolina gambled on an extra point pass with two minutes left and it paid off as the never say die Tar Heels came from behind to edge un derdog William and Mary 36 35 Saturday When you engage the ene my with the best you have to the best of your ability the eventual outcome is relative only to the character of theindividuals involved Meng 1971? By Marc Meng Tinies Sports Writer Obviously the Tar Heels had put little stock in the recent theory that football doesn't build character They picked themselves up out of the dirt five times Saturday before they finally went ahead kids came back time and time Dooley said i think they jwere whipped and they didn't think they were whipped If not character I know what is And they got it William and Mary almost pulled off the ultimate coup for a Southern Conference team to knock off an At lantic Coast Conference pow er And the victory was al ready in sight late in the game when Carolina' inter cepted an Indian pass to halt the driving Tribe and set up the final TD Paul Miller rifled a pass to ward Lewis Jolley over the middle on winning con version try after the 35 34 marker a defensive tackle tipped it high in the air and Jolley managed to snatch it out of the air for the winning margin Nothing came cheap in Kenan Stadium Saturday It was a grueling ground game that made the differ ence for Carolina Miller went to the air only eight times (completing six) but the run ning game hacked out 384 yards Jolley took a pitchout from Miller from the 13 for the fi nal UNC touchdown with 2:01 remaining to climax a 76 yard drive The trip downfield in cluded a 15 yard penalty against William and Mary Coach Lou Holtz Holtz rushed onto the field to dispute a pass reception he reputed the receiver trapped biggest boner of the day was the penalty against Holtz said know how the official had time to see me but see the Miller had scored the two touchdowns preceding winning tally bailing the Tar Heels out of deficits of 21 14 and 28 21 One was a 10 yar der the other eight He threw a seven yard scoring strike to Johnny Cowell to get his hand in another earlier in the game The touchdown pass enabled the Tar Heels to leave the field at halftime tied 14 14 and the pass came with only five seconds remaining in the first half William and Mary kept the pressure on throughout the game UNC fumbled on the Indian 17 on the opening drive and drove to the UNC two and fumbled into the end zone After that early ex change of jitters composure reigned The Indians first scoring drive originated on their own two and Phil Mosser ripped off a 32 yard run in the drive to put him over 2000 career yards John Gargano scored the first of two touchdowns of the day on a 23 yard keeper around left end his second tally was almost a duplicate of the first except it covered 15 yards and occurred on the first drive of the third period Mosser tacked up the sec ond score on a two yard dash in the closing minute of the half The Indians had re covered a UNC fumble on the Carolina 17 and a pass inter ference call put the ball with in striking distance Gargano playing second fiddle to injured starter Steve Regan pitched like a profes sional Saturday Before Saturday he had completed on only four of 13 passes He hit on six of his first seven tossed Saturday all to David Knight 97 yards His game statistics read 16 of 23 for 283 yards Knight was paid the highest compliment possible from a coach Dooley said run up against a receiver like Remember the Tar Heels played Notre Dame and its touted receiver Tom Gate wood Knight shattered the school record for yardage on pass receptions He hauled in nine passes for 194 yards Gargano threw passes of 20 8 and 26 yards in the third pe riod to set up a six yard touchdown run by Mosser He hit Billy Gardner for 20 and Ed Hellise on the other two He threw three strikes to Knight on the final touchdown drive gaining 36 7 and 14 yards Dennis Cambal packed the ball the final yard for the score Holtz in tears said it was the defensive play of the Tribe that did it in tried but we do he said had so many mental breakdowns This was the third heartbreaker had this year going to be a long time forgetting this Carolina played without its top two running backs Ire Oglesby and Geof Hamlin Both are sidelined with inju ries However relief came from a surprising source Bill Hite a sophomore tailback He had only one impressive game this year (30 yards gained against Tulane) before carrying 28 times against the Indians and compiling 146 yards for the effort The Tar Heels play for the ACC championship at home next week against Clemson Carolina is now 6 2 William and Mary stands 5 3 for the season Wm Mary 7 7 14 35 North Carolina 0 14 7 Kentucky Hexes Tech Brews 33 27 Victory of THE TIMES Sunday October 31 1971 By BILL BRILL Times Sports Editor LEXINGTON Ky Under a sun splashed sky Kentucky celebrated Halloween a few hours early Saturday The Wildcats spooked the total offense leader Don Stock tricked Virginia Tech with a simple counter play and treated themselves to a 33 27 Homecoming victo ry that virtually ended any hopes of a winning season for the Gobblers Kentucky which had no punch in dropping six straight after an opening win against Clemson found paper mache defense to its liking in running up its greatest of fense of the season But the big difference was in defense although high powered attack eventual ly wound up with 447 yards The first four times Tech had the ball Kentucky inter cepted Strock and ran off to a 20 0 lead After that Tech was in command for two periods and eventually tied it at 20 20 mid way in the third quarter But just when the 35000 Homecoming fans thought Tech was going to prove an unwelcome visitor the Wild cats pulled themselves togeth er tehy came up with an 80 yard seven minute punishing drive for the go ahead touch down then end Cecil Bowens forced a Strock fumble and Kentucky converted that into a 31 yard scoring shove that proved the clincher Tech tried hard to come back with brilliant more tailback (Jungle) Barber doing the hard work Barber fumbled right at the goal preventing his fourth touchdown but center Wayne Stinnette recovered for Tech in the end zone to make it 33 27 Tech still had time and got the ball back with 3:13 to play at its own 30 Strock passed the Hokies to the Ken tucky 42 but then went for the bomb and Jeff Woodcock intercepted in the end zone to end all hopes for the come back Strock No 2 in passing na tionally had only eight inter ceptions in six games before this one but he consistently overthrew all day Almost all of the Kentucky steals came on poorly thrown passes Even though the Gobblers now 2 5 with Houston yet to play wiped out the 20 point deficit it was that horrendous first quarter that made the difference i Kentucky punchless until now wiped out the Tech line and linebackers with a simple counter play up the middle call that not being ready to said disappointed coach Charlie Coffey call it not getting the job Whatever it: was Kentucky scored four of the first five times it had the ball and ex cept for a 58 yard pass play from Bernie Scruggs to Wake orest transfer Lee Clymer the damage was done on the ground And on that third and 18 pass to Clymer the Joss was only eight yards up the middle and Clymer did the rest Kentucky drove 55 yards with the oepning kickoff only See Page 3 Col 3 Virginia Tech 0 7 13 21 Kentucky 20 0 7 6 3i Kirk 32 Kirk 42 Kent Kotar 36 run (Kirk kick) Kent Clymer 58 RALEIGH NC Don Lawrence was afraid to smile He want to look up for fear somebody would run out and change the num bers on the scoreboard or the third straight Satur day University of Virginia football team led at the half So it was not unrea sonable for the Virginia coach to pace the sidelines in the second half waiting for some thing bad to happen And some bad things hap pened ortunately for Vir ginia most of them happened to North Carolina Slate result ing in the second victory of the season 14 10 It was a game to decide who would stay in the ACC cellar Overall the execution was not good but from a com petitive viewpoint it was a splendid football game Like Lawrence almost all of the 21600 Homecoming fans kept waiting for some thing to happen After all NC State had beaten Virgin ia 12 straight times and the Cavaliers hadn't whipped the Wolfpack since the inception of the ACC But Virginia made the big plays both offensively and de fensively And the biggest play of the day was a 30 yard touchdown pass from Larry Albert to Dave Sullivan It was a fantastic catch The play wasn't that great neither was the throw It was all Sullivan who made the grab in the end zone with the defender all over him That touchdown put Virginia ahead 14 10 at the half The lead gave Lawrence cause to worry He had been there before last week against Army the week be fore against Clemson had such tough a said 1 help but wonder when the roof would cave in And sure enough we got some bad breaks in the sec ond half but our kids stayed in there and refused to The victory put Virginia's record at 2 6 with Virginia Tech to play next Saturday The loss leaves pathetic State at 1 7 and with little hope spite of our terrible Lawrence said consider this a successful sea son if we could win the next three Our three biggest ri vals are coming Virginia Tech North Carolina and Maryland Winning those would really help our pro Virginia opened the game in serious difficulty as Kent Merritt fumbled the kickoff and the Wolfpack recovered on the Cavalier 25 but the scoring bid was thwarted when Steve Sorba intercepted Bruce pass and re turned it to the State 36 The had a long shot at a field goal but Billy Maxwell missed from the 48 Then State took the ball on its 20 and drove 80 yards in 13 plays for the Sophomore Willie Burden who had 108 yards rushing and broke a Wolfpack soph rushing record (657 yards for the season) scored the touch down with a three yard run Sam Harrell's boot gave State a 7 0 lead Virginia came right back to score and the Cavaliers looked nothing like their old fumble bumble selves They went 69 yards in six plays quarterback Larry Albert gaining 17 12 more coming on an Albert to Sudivan pass 13 on a Merritt run 15 more on a Sullivan reverse and 15 and the touchdown coming on an Albert to Bill Davis pass boot knotted the score 7 7 It was only a matter of minutes before Virginia scored again Linebacker Kevin Michaels intercepted another Shaw pass and Vir ginia had it in great position on the Wolfpack 24 Merritt gained four then Albert lost 10 and Virginia showed symptoms of heading in a direction other than that of the State goal But just then just when State looked like it had turned the Cavaliers Sullivan made that great catch while State See Page 3 Col 4 Virginia 7 7 0 NC State 7 3 0 Burden 3 run (Harrell kick) Davis 15 pass from Albert (Maxwell kick)
