something more than any single category and creating a unique vehicle for the stage The Barter troupe has up dated Brendan Behan's play so that it takes place in the strife and warfare of present day Ireland Under the direc tion of Ken Costigan and against still another outstand ing set by Bennet Averyt the cast captures exactly the right combination of gaiety seriousness and informality What with things happening constantly in all parts of the stage and the need for Irish accents above and beyond re membering the lines and tim ing there were a few rough spots during open ing night performance can relate well to one another on a personal basis even if they remain at the mercy of those larger forces that' move them despite themselves to war and mur der But it says more than this too because basically de spite these underlying dark themes the Hostage is a happy play a play that can even manage to laugh at American cheese in an easy to cook with form AndOld English Brand process
