far more help Saturday from his team mates and led Georgia Tech to a 42 19 win over Virginia that sent the Yellow Jackets surging into the Gator Bowl King sparkling left handed sophomore shattered pass defense mostly on third down plays and wrote his name four times into the school record book It was also a moment of reincarnation for Davis the quarterback who was back at his old post after six games as a halfback With Tommy Hodges hobbled by a shoulder and ankle injury Davis took the helm and Im mediately regained the Atlantic Coast Conference total offense record that he lost just last week to Tommy Ray Davis stripped the porous Tech defense for 376 yards most of it (277) in the second Spotlight alls On Bob Davis half when he led the Cavaliers to three touchdowns and within inches of a fourth It was just a fantastic offen sive spree for the delighted crowd' of 40094 as Tech sent Coach Bobby Dodd a bowling for the 12th time in his 21 distinguished years here By BILL BRILL Times Writer ERRUM errum com pleted the first undefeated and untied season in the junior history Saturday with a spectacular 48 0 victory over the University of Richmond reshmen An overflow and noisy Par Day crowd of 2200 watched the Panthers win their ninth game and fatten their chances for a post season bowl bid errum ranked third nation ally by the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Associa tion) one of three teams under consideration for the National Championship Playoff Bowl in Savannah Ga Nov 26 The Panthers are also being considered for the Junior Rose Bowl in Pasadena Calif Dec 21 errum officials are sitting tight waiting on a possible invitation to the National Play off Bowl The invitation if it comes is expected Sunday eve ning errum president Dr Ralph Arthur noted that errum would accept the bid for the national playoff game in Geor gia instead of the Rose Bowl bid if both were offered because the Georgia victor is recognized as the national champion If the Georgia bid come the Panthers will anxiously wait to see if a Junior Rose Bowl bid comes their way However the Rose Bowl officials make their decision for over a week errum which outscored the opposition 244 19 this season posted two touchdowns in each quarter while rolling to the easy victory errum took the lead with 12:13 to play when halfback rank Sorrells raced 44 yards around right end for the first SCOTTIE HELT Times Sports Writer LEXINGTON The record book took another beat ing here Saturday and so did The Citadel The Keydets made quick work of the Bulldogs scoring 14 points the first two times they had possession and coasted in for a 21 7 victory Eddie Willis legged out the longest punt return in the history a 64 yarder the very first time the red and yellow got its eager hands on the football And with all time throwingest quarterback Hill Ellett of Roa noke perfectly on target for almost a half the Keydets had this one tucked away before Citadel could regroup its de fenses Ellett completed his first five passes the sixth was inter cepted then he bounced back on tareet for eicht completions in 11 tries for the half two for touchdowns The 11 attempts in two quar ters gave him 170 for the year good enough to break Howard old mark of 168 set in 1960 Content to hold onto the football and unable to gain the favorable field position he had most of the first half Ellett tried discovered the truth of that axiom here Saturday afternoon struggling all the way before finally vanquishing Villanova 21 19 Tech won literally by inches when a Wildcat try for two points in the fourth quarter that would have tied the game was stopped dead on the goal line Villanova was supposed to be bad A 1 6 record including consecutive losses to Xavier (35 0) and the Quantico Marines (32 7) seemed to indicate as much But somehow or other the script got a little muddled Tech stop the varied Wildcat offense and must have felt lucky to win even by the most unimpressive two point margin Each team had 20 first downs Villanova had 246 yards rushing to 200 for Tech while the Gobblers won the passing duel 96 63 It was a very uninspiring performance by defense the same defense that played so admirably against Vanderbilt anc lorida State Perhaps injuries were respon sible perhaps there was simply a letdown after four straight punishing demanding football games Probably it was a
