best known breeders in Vermont Into that State there were imported in 1810 through the then American Consul in Spain a number of pure Spanish Merinos belonging to the celebiated Paulor and Infantado excellent quality with a strong and symmetrically compact frame the sheep being singularly haidy Several of those now imported here are of precisely that breed which at the great Hamburg ram fair in town and the immediate neighbourhood at one o'clock a on Wednesday the 12th instant At eight on the previous evening the entire coast line and horizon became suddenly enveloped in a dense and impenetrable cloud whilst the atmosphere became close and stifling in a few seconds sheet after sheet of lightning does not describe illumined space from south east to north west quivering or becoming suspended as it were for three and four seconds at a time one flash succeeding another in rapid and constant succession This continued until five minutes to one in the morning when an extraordinary rushing sound like the charge of a large body of heavy cavalry was heard instantly followed by a storm of ice in square triangular oblong and round pieces occasioning a fear ful noise This storm lasted with some intermission for upwards of two hours and was accompanied by the flashes of sheets of fire before described and continuous rolls of thunder In the morning a large block of con gealed ice was found at the kitchen door and upon breaking it some of the pieces which formed it were perfectly defined and were upwards of an inch in width and length ortunately there was very little wind or much more damage to glass would have occurred As it was the fruit trees especially peach and apple trees in some of the gardens are cleared of the fruit peas and beans shelled and beaten down cabbages cut down as if fired into with errapeshot whilst in the flower garden all the more tender plants have been trim ed off as with a knife the flower buds and branches alike being cut away together The storm appears to have caused much terror to the residents in the town many of whom in their affright thought the end of the world had indeed come The crops I trust are not much injured as the storm does not appear to have ex tended far inland but within the space to which it was confined the 4 oldest inhabitant will not soon forget that of last Wednesday Having been in Sydney in October last upon the occasion of a very heavy hail storm there I can say that it bore no comparison for violence or in the size of the hail or pieces of ice with that just A melancholy instance of
