Editor MILES STADIUM Blacksburg Nov Virginia Tech's unde rated Gobblers weie battled to a standstill for 30 minutes of their game with tough Waynesburg this afternoon but the Virginian rallied their forces in the last half and won handily 20 6 Tech took to the air for two of its touchdowns and scored the third on a pickoff of a stray Waynesburg aerial combined with a WAYNESBURG one of the giants in the small col lege football circles stepped into higher company today but Tech's 15th national ranking made little impression on the Pennsyl vanians The Yellow Jackets came to Blacksburg boasting a five game winning streak and made a val iant effort to add number six or a little better than 29 min utes the Jackets appeared to have better than a 50 50 chance of upsetting the high riding Gob biers but with 59 seconds le maining of the second quarter Billy pitched a touch down pass to Tom Petty to match the six points hung up by Wayncs buig eailier in the period resh man rank Webster was rushed gridiron polish in its last two performances pushed a punchless Citadel team all over Wilson ield here today for a 42 0 Southern Conference victory About 5000 fans watched the fun The Keydets warming up for their traditional Thanksgiving Day encounter with Virginia Tech at Roanoke socked the Bulldogs with the brilliant running of junior halfback Dale Vaughn and the all around generalship of quarterback Dave Woolwine WOOLWINE the 160 pound senior from Abingdon saw reason to throw only four passes during his three quarters of action He connected on three of them and all three went for touchdowns Vauchn a slippery 190 pounder who stands six feet three whacked the middle and ran the ends for 147 yards in 15 carries He was on the receiving end of two of Woolwine's passes and scored a third touchdown on a buck from two yards out All told Vaughn gained 177 yards While the Keydet offense roll ing up more than 400 yards was little short of sensational it was at least equalled by the bone rattling defense The Citadel had to settle for a minus five yards rushing in the first half and added only 40 yards to that in the sec ond half The Bulldogs admittedly weakened by injiiiies over (lie season tried five piwrs who combined for 15 four hit (heir marks for a gain of yards but a like number were snagged by VMI defenders ABILITY to steal Waynesburg's passes proved one of the strong
